Black And White - baby book, board book

I bought this book for my son for his one-month birthday. Almost immediately he gravitated to the Black silhouettes of familiar objects on a white background. He loved it--and it held up well to his teething.Only one down side: After only a few short months his interest in this book has waned whereas his interest in other, more colorful books has picked up. For that reason I would suggest buying this book as a shower gift or for an infant under six months old. Black on White

Since infants are more aware of contrast than color in the beginning, I 'read' this book with my daughter from the time she was four months old through about her first year. Cover to cover, I read the words (title and book description, which almost hypnotically became part of the experience!) and described the pictures, sometimes tracing them with a finger. Our interaction with the small book was cuddly and verbal, as the images served as guides. She had her favorites, and the book is well-worn, chewed in places. It was a daily gentle activity, holding her interest, obviously delighting and stimulating, and paved the way for more and more books. Personally I prefer it to the White on Black, and always give it as part of a gift packet to friends with a new baby in their lives.

I bought this book on Amazon 18 months ago for my newborn nephew. He had other books, but for months this was the only book that interested him. I remember sitting with him and holding the pictures in front of him while he stared at them. Later, he learned how to turn the pages. Now, he uses it less, but is starting to learn the names of some of the pictures. As with the other reviewers, I have also given this as a gift to newborns. The White on Black book was not a winner with my nephew.

This is a great book for parents to share with their infants--to the newly talking. Each page features a distinct and easily recognizabe shape. The hard pages are nearly indestructable. Our kids loved looking at these books. We cried when we finally moved them into the garage because the kids had finally outgrown them. We make these part of every baby shower basket we put together. It's never too early to get into the habit of "reading" to your children, and these are the perfect "first books" for every child.

This is one of several black and white books that we got before our first baby was born. He definitely did like the black and white books more than other books for the first several months, and this one was fine. However, I usually chose other books because I wasn't totally sure what one of the pictures in this book was supposed to be (Ritz crackers? Flowers without stems???) Also, the pictures are all completely unrelated to each other, so it may be hard to find things to say to your baby about them if you're not someone who can easily make conversation about anything! If I could only get one black and white book, I'd definitely go with Look, Look! by Peter Linenthal, as the baby was most fascinated by the pictures in that one, and it had a simple text (this book has no words) that helped me come up with stuff to say about each page.

Baby's had this book since birth... and after 4 months, it is still one of her favorites. The pictures really grab her attention, and she likes to study them. Also since there are no words, you can make up a new story for the pictures each time if you want!

Granted, my son is only four months old, but this book is a big hit. I'm sure he'll outgrow it eventually, but that's the case with any book! If you have a very little one, this is a great book to start with. My son has only a dozen or so books so far, and out of all of them, this is the one he kicks and coos at the most. I'm attending a baby shower in a couple months and I'm definitely going to throw in a copy of "Black on White" for her.

Who says babies are too young for books? This book (and Ms. Hoban's other similar books)is a shining example that we're never too young to be introduced to books and reading. The bright, crisp, contrasting images are perfect for new babies. My baby loves this book, and will sit entranced for quite a while as we talk about the images we see. My only complaint would be that it is too short! (Of course, so are babies' attention spans) I think this book is a great baby shower or 'new baby' present. Their first book, what could be a better gift?

I used to work with children's books, and have probably tried 100 books out with my 2 1/2 month old. This is the only book she LOVES to look at that doesn't have moving parts. Sure, she likes to listen to other books, but this is the one that is visually exciting to her. I can prop it up for her to look at and she keeps staring, transfixed, even as I go run to get the phone or whatever. The folks who complain that it bores them or their older babies have missed the point. Bold black and white books like this are for very young babies, when their vision and brains are still developing. No, it doesn't tell a story; that is not the purpose of this book. It is all looking at an interesting shape. No, these aren't the most common things in your child's life; this is perfectly appropriate, because they wouldn't be able to connect any shape, object and word this young even if you tried. No, you won't use it for years, or even a whole year, probably. I think less than $10 is not too much to pay for something that is going to get my child excited about interacting with books from day 1. Plus so much is overwhelming as a new baby/parent, and this is one thing that you can definitely enjoy together. I am planning on giving Black & White, which I think is the fold-out version, as baby gifts from now on.

Newborn babies' vision is not highly developed. High-contrast patterns or pictures are easiest for them to see in the first few months of life. Tana Hoban's black & white board books are terrific choices. With simple illustrations of objects that will be familiar to babies, this book meets all my criteria for choosing books for babies. A fantastic choice for a new baby gift. - Board Book - Newborn Gift - Childrens Books - Baby Book'

Paper Money - catalogs

I was utterly dissapointed with this catalog. Krause publications has had years since the previous edition was released to come up to speed with current market conditions and values but have failed, once again, to do so. I would love to find world banknotes at the prices quoted in this new catalog which is supposed to reflect current values. You are better off keeping the previous volume as there is really no difference in pricing which is astounding concidering the market increase in the last two years. I shall refrain from purchasing this particular volume again! Standard Catalog Of World Paper Money General Issues 1368-1960 (Standard Catlog of World Paper Money 13th edition: General Issues)

As an anthology of history, it's a terrific look into colonialism, revolution, race relations, inflation, civil unrest and war. Great pictures, excellent annotations (lots of typos and misspellings, though not as many as in the new 1961-present volume, which may have been edited by sixth graders) and easy-to-follow chronological presentation.

As a price guide, it's still sadly lacking - there has been no serious updating of most French and British colonial values (although the values for most of the notes of France itself have been significantly increased) as well as post-WWI inflationary issues (Hungary, Poland, Germany), which all sell for considerably more than listed in the book. Just a short visit to eBay on a Sunday afternoon will dispel any notion that the price listings for these and other issues are even in the same ballpark as reality.

For the time being, it's the best thing going and well worth the price, as long as you supplement it with some online auction surfing and a couple visits to coin and currency shows, just to see what the stuff is actually selling for. - Catalogs'

Fountain Pen - fountain pen, rhodia

I bought this for my dad so he would quit doing sketches on scrap pieces of graph paper and cocktail napkins. Very nice quality notebook, well designed. My father is a furniture builder and I think this will hold his sketches, dimensions, notes and plans well. I did think it would be a little more study, it is hard cover but not as sturdy as I expected. Also it is not very thick. But very attractive, useful, and unique in that it is dots instead of the traditional graph paper. I recommend it to anyone looking for a unique sketchbook. Notebook Power Adapters - power plug adapter, adapter

AUUUUGH!!!

After hours of rattling through website after website, learning the difference between a converter and an adapter, having a crash course in watts and volts and hertz and computers and hair dryers and coming to the brink of insanity because, it seems, there isn't a website in existence that gives enough information about these accessories to learn what a 4-second encounter with the actual item in its package in a brick and mortar store would tell you (for instance: CAN I STICK MY COMPUTER PLUG INTO THE DAMN THING?!), I found this beauty. Here. And all my questions appeared to have been answered. So I, being the trusting soul that I am, purchased it.

Well, I didn't know what I didn't know until the product arrived.

Now I know what I didn't know.

I am livid.

THIS PRODUCT WILL NOT WORK WITH YOUR PLUGS THAT HAVE 3 PRONGS!

NOT EVEN IF YOU PRAY REALLY HARD!

NOT EVEN IF YOU SACRIFICE A GOAT.

NOT EVEN IF YOU TRY IT ON A BOAT.

IT WILL NOT WORK WITH THEM ON A TRAIN

IT WILL NOT WORK WITH THEM ON A PLANE

IT WILL NOT WORK WITH 3-PRONGED PLUGS

IT WILL NOT VACUUM ANY RUGS.

Back it goes, to the place where junky products (that more information would have saved me the trouble of purchasing) go.

With PC Mover and that other adapter I bought from Dell (the one that was also, obviously, manufactured in a world where all the plugs have 2 prongs).

Did I mention AUUUUUGH!!!!!

So.

On the off chance that this review will not get buried under the pile of reviews written by people with, apparently, no 3-pronged devices, I submit it to Amazon with a prayer for all of those people who are lucky enough to own portable computers or other electronics that come with 3-pronged plugs AND who are fortunate enough to be embarking on some sort of international travel:

BUY THE BELKIN UNIVERSAL JOBBIE...THE WHITE ONE.

(it's probably above this review in the place where other recommended products live. The Belkin comes from a world where 3-pronged devices exist and are plentiful, roaming the land with their electronic devices in tow, happily converting electricity from 120 to 240 and back again as they enrich their owner's lives with electronic goodness.)

Thanks for reading.

I don't know about you, but I feel better now. Kensington 33117 International All-in-One Travel Plug Adapter

If you travel overseas you will definitively love this adapter. Unlike other travel adapters that have several pieces that you need to carry around, this has all the plug connectors integrated into one compact self contained cylindrical unit in which you select the type of plug used in the country you are visiting. Absolutely the most practical unit I have used. It is also safe to use since it has a built-in fuse.

This may seems obvious but you need to know that this device does not convert the voltage so don't plug your electronic devices unless its power units states that the Input voltage ranges from 110 to 240 VAC @ 50-60 Hz (probably the most common around Europe, Asia and America).

Absolutely a most have if you travel with your laptop, digital camera, cell phone and other suitable devices.

used 2 of these while we were on vacation in egypt for 3 weeks. Never had a problem and they were flawless. To the gent that noted they fell out of the socket on him and they were to big...I can only say if you don't push them all the way in they and any other device you use will fall out...and there big because they can be used in th EU, Japan, Africa, US, ect... if you wish to spend the money on an all inclusive solution and travel to various parts of the world...then this is a good choice rather than having a hodge podge of adaptors lying about.

I bought this item for my trip to China. It did not work. Luckily the hotels that we stayed in had an adapter we could use. I called Kensington about my adapter, and they said I could return it and would refund my money since they have a 90 day return policy. I bought the adapter in September and sent it certified mail within their time frame. This is currently January and have not heard from them. My advise to those thinking of using it for China. Don't waste your money on this item.

Read the fine print on this -- this product does not convert or reduce electrical voltage -- essentially what this does is provide a physical way for (insert your country's) plug to fit into (insert destination country's) plug. So if the country you are visiting runs on, say, 220, make sure that the device you want to plug into it can handle the 220 volts so that it doesn't blow up -- and that information will (typically) be handily located on the device itself (i.e., look at the small print on your phone charger, and see if it says 100-240V 50-60Hz)

I've used this adaptor to run my laptop in China, France, Italy, England, and Ireland. Although it's made of plastic and feels a little fragile, it's really quite hardy and it's worked like a charm in every location. I've purchased several as gifts and always been treated as a hero afterwards.

One popular (and funny) one-star review on here claims that the adaptor doesn't work with grounded plugs. That's 100% wrong. It works with them in a hotel, it works with them in a motel. It worked with them in France, and when I used it to iron my pants. (Well to plug in my iron, anyway.) I've never used it on a boat, but it helped my computer write a note.

Okay so I'm not as funny as he is. But this thing really works. - Adapter - Travel - Converter - Power Plug Adapter'

Great Deal - great price, great deal

I own two winches for my snow plow, on my 4 wheeler. The winches work so well, and are very dependible. The only problem I had was the switch works erratic after a couple years of use. Took the switch apart cleaned up the burnt contacts and the winch worked like new. The winch is worth the money I payed for It. Champion Power Equipment 12002 2000-lb Power Winch Kit

For the price I guess I got what I paid for , First this winch is built for ATV use. The battery cable is all of 5 feet long.

The remote is made to mount on handle bars and you cant remove the Mounting hardware if you aren't going to use it on an ATV.

Also the remote cable is very short 5 feet or less, so no getting out of the way of a snapped cable with out addin some wire to it.

When I went to put the clevis on and I put it in free wheel to pull some cable out the whole spool unraveled , what a mess , I guess I never expected steel cable to unwind like a spring. with no manual handle I now have to hook this up to something heavy and drag it back so I can rewind the spool.

But like I said for the money and free shipping probably a good deal.

The installation of this winch was easy. I wished it would have been made in USA. It is a light duty winch. It will be on a 4 wheeler and not a tractor or truck, so it will probably work fine. I liked the remote leads and buttons for operation. The leads were long and the controls mounted easily to the handle bars. The cable is prewrapped with tension, so the first time you free wheel the winch to use the cable will act like a Rod and Reel spool full of line unravelling.

I bought this winch to pull a 900-lb waverunner out of the water. The winch pulled it a few inches out then stalled. I then added a block to reduce the effective weight to 450-lbs. It would run for 2 seconds then stall. I sent it back and ordered a superwinch from costco.com that works great. Also not to happy that I only got a partial refund after spending hours trying to make the Champion work. Realistically it would pull about 250 lbs. If that is all you need to do, then perhaps it will work for you.

I replaced the manual wench on my pop up camper and it works great. Saves me a lot of effort when setting up camp.

Installation was easy I wired the hand held controller through a four pole trailer connector and keep it inside the camper when not in use. The wench is connected to the house battery on the camper.

Other units made for this purpose were over 200$ this was a vary reasonable alternative. The only difference I see is the dedicated units have shut off points when the roof is fully raised. You have to be careful to be sure to stop the wench when the roof is fully raised.

I bought this winch to replace the winch on my homeowner snowplow, knowing it was not going to mount correctly, because the winch that came with my plow was a real piece of junk. it turns out a couple of new holes in mounting plate is all it needed to attach securely. this unit worked for better than the one that came with my plow. it's smoother, much quieter, and was less than half the price. I've only had the chance to use it a few times, but so far, it's been great. smooth, quiet, and strong enough to hold the plow up without slipping. we'll seen in a couple more years. - Great Price - Winches - Winch - Great Deal'

Science Fiction - comedy, adventure

SOUTHLAND TALES is, quite simply, bizarre. It resembles a futuristic comic book whose dismembered pages have been flung about the room, defying understanding of a plot, while providing some strange moments of entertainment mixed with metaphor and farce. If this grab bag concept of a film doesn't appeal, then skip this film. But for the adventuresome viewer this is a funny lollipop of a movie.

July 4, 2005 and an atomic bomb explodes during the usual follies of the holiday. What happens from that point to the effects on contemporary Los Angeles is an amalgam of American responses to current events of potential annihilation of the country and the appearance of a lot of strange characters whose minds are either tethered by amnesia or by corrupted views of reality, or who are simply out of sync with what is happening. The cast for this bit of acidic and sour fluff that resembles disconnected fragments of the fertile imagination of writer director Richard Kelly ('Donnie Darko') includes a fine Dwayne Johnson (excellent here!), Seann William Scott, Nora Dunn, Miranda Richardson, Jon Lovitz, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mandy Moore, Justin Timberlake, John Larroquette, Christopher Lambert and many others. Just don't try to make sense of it and sit back and watch the crazy antics of a cast having fun with one view of the apocalypse. It is entertaining...Grady Harp, March 08 Southland Tales

This movie cannot be summarized or explained easily so I will provide my impressions of this strangely fascinating movie. First off, it's a long movie (over 2 hours) and the first 15 mins. confused me until I just let go of any normal movie expectations and sat back to enjoy the freak show that is Southland Tales. There is no way this film is going to appeal to the masses and if odd movies appeal to you, then you better run out to see it at the handful of theaters playing it or wait for the dvd release. I know I can't wait for the dvd release (please let there be commentary) for repeated viewings. This movie was so crammed full of insight, digs and jokes that I couldn't catch every single thing. This mind blowing version of what the USA might be like in the very near future is crazy but addictive. I found the scene where someone questions after a commercial, "Did I just see two cars f**k?" "Yes, but that was the European version" to be very telling. The smarmy salesman easily tosses aside any moral questions. Are Americans being sold swamp land by Corporations? Some might even question if the viewer is being sold a load of crap dressed up as fine art. I think not. The aggressive subtext was a nice touch too. Be prepared for very crude dialogue - I found it amusing but it might not appeal to others. The against-type casting was a stroke of brilliance (Sarah Michele "Buffy" Gellar as a porn star and Mandy Moore as a I can't say without giving things away). Obscure references were a treat such as the Baron's "Dune" overtones and Kevin Smith (not easily recognizable) evokes the Wizard of Oz. I loved the light handed social commentary. This film never came off as preachy but made it's point of view on serious issues nonetheless (it's not for the war in Iraq for starters): they used a heavy technology vibe to get some points across (there are many scenes with several computer screens on view with running commentary underneath each screen); the national anthem was being sung in Spanish to start and then continued in English; the energy crisis resolution was pure sci-fi; and the Revelations from the Bible, as read by Timberlake, were played out by the characters (Revelation that apocalypse will be brought on by a pregnant woman (Moore) surrounded by a dragon (tattoo on Mei Ling's back) and two beasts (you get the point). A lot of attention was given to the minute detail of this movie and that dedication showed. The "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" subplot was amusing and only one example of what this movie was all about to me - a joke, and it invited us all to enjoy it with them. At IDent, all the employees wore these see-through plastic jackets that meant what? They looked out-of-place and silly. Soon, the same exact question was sarcastically being asked by an onscreen actor. Another example is when Kysta Now (porn star) attempts to sell her screen play (who doesn't in LA? apparently not even a looming doomsday can stop Hollywood) with such typical blondness ("apparently, the future is much more futuristic then scientists thought") that one actor cannot keep a straight face. Everyone else is nodding along but this one actor cannot stop laughing to himself. It all seems to be a joke and some of the actors got it and some didn't. It's almost as if two sets of scripts were handed out on this film, one set said it was a dark comedy and the other set said this was a serious film about the future of America. Fans of the director's earlier work (Donnie Darko) will not be disappointed. This movie stands out as a film with edge that many viewers will not fully comprehend (myself included) but can certainly appreciate. Well worth watching on the big screen to help with the enormity of the what is going on in this film but waiting for the dvd with cribnotes might help.

See, here's the thing. This film is like 2001: a space odyssey; it's meant to be "experienced," preferably after two bottles of NyQuil.

It's a hands down amazing film. Well shot, paced, edited, cast, and scored.

But it's borderline insane. Watch with care, but don't hate on the guy for being original.

Southland Tales is not your typical science fiction movie. It's not your typical thriller, or even your typical independent film (if there is such a thing). I don't know exactly what kind of film this is, and I don't think the creators of Southland Tales really know either. One thing for sure, this film is hysterical, as long as you don't take it too seriously.

Richard Kelly follows his dark cult film Donnie Darko with this portrait of an alternate version of America where darker events and imaginative technological developments have led to a more extreme version of the present day. Terrorist acts on American soil beyond 9/11 have led to more US military incursions around the globe and greater governmental control over civil liberties. It is mid-2008, and people connected to the Iraq war and the upcoming Presidential election are involved in a mysterious technological/mystical/religious/drug -addled conspiracy. The film centers on Boxer Santaros, a movie star married to the candidate for vice presidency's daughter, who suffers from amnesia. He finds himself in the company of Krystal Now, a porn star branching into the reality show/music/energy drink business, who tells him he's directing and producing a thriller about the end of the world based on his own screenplay, which she has actually written herself. And the storyline gets much more convoluted from there.

The best way to make sense of this movie is to read Southland Tales: The Prequel Saga, a graphic novel written by Richard Kelly, which covers the events prior to the movie. No wait, it still won't make much sense. Well, it will at least explain some of the loose ends in more detail, such as how the characters got into the situations they're in at the beginning of the film: how Pilot Abilene (Justin Timberlake) and Roland Taverner (Seann William Scott) ended up in a friendly-fire incident that scarred them both; how the body in the box ended up in Simon Theory (Kevin Smith)'s possession; and what the heck Santaros mumbles when he gets overwhelmed. Reading the graphic novel will lessen (not eliminate) the number of times you say "Huh?" while watching, but nothing will stop the ever increasing times, as the movie continues, you'll say "What?" in greater frequency and volume.

And therein lies the charm of this crazy, patch-work quilt of a movie. As you watch, you'll find yourself moving from willing disbelief to confusion to frustration and then to utter hysteria as the farcical nature of the labyrinthine story line overwhelms you. This will be easier for some to accept than others, for Richard Kelly didn't really intend for Southland Tales to so absurd, but unfortunately that's what it ends up being. The antics of the characters, and the depictions by the actors, are more and more hilarious as the film goes on.

There are too many uniquely memorable scenes and lines to encapsulate here, but some of the best are: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's depiction of Santaro's nervous fidgeting; Cheri Oteri as a psychotic henchman, accompanied by a deadpan Jon Lovitz channeling Rutger Hauer channeling Hannibal Lecter; Amy Proehler (from Saturday Night Live - theres's a lot of Saturday Night Live alumni here) and Wood Harris (from "The Wire") pretending to be a bride and groom in a domestic disturbance; Chris Lambert dealing arms out of a ice cream truck; Seann William Scott playing twin brothers who are both constantly injected with designer drugs causing them to interrupt their deadpan deliveries with cross-eyed collapse (over and over again); Wallace Shawn as a mad scientist wearing mascara and his thinning hair moussed into a curlicue on his forehead; Bai Ling revealing a hideous mole (apparently real) in her plunging (no, more like missing) neckline; and one of my favorite actresses, Sarah Michelle Gellar, as Santoro's scheming porn-star love interest, delivering her lines with a waifish tone and "come hither" look. Gellar, and all the actors, do the best they can with the script, better suited for the world of comic books, but they can't keep the film from devolving into an unintentionally ridiculous commentary on the policies of Bush administration, and the director's view of the world Bush and his people tried to create.

Watching the film as a serious attempt as political commentary melded with futuristic science fiction will lead to frustrated disappointment, but the viewer who is looking for a wacky, comic-book-style ensemble performance will find the 2 and ½ hour film (that's 2 ½ hours, be prepared for that) a enjoyable release from reality, even worthy of repeated viewing. If you're in the right frame of mind, you'll find tons of moments to talk about after the film is finished, like whether Gellar meant to sway on her high heels as she walks away in one scene, or Johnson's personal belief about suicide, or Justin Timberlake's singing and dancing interlude (yes, that's right). If you come to this film knowing what it's like, then, like the red-headed stepchild of the family or the runt dog of the litter, it may soften your heart and become a favorite of yours. - Comedy - Science Fiction - Adventure - Seann William Scott'

I love this backpack has some extra room - so you can add essential items for your family that aren't included. Overall - a really good start. I added a Swiss army knife, some gum and hard candy, pull ups (I have small kids), sanitary napkins, and a few other odds and ends to make this a more complete bag for our family.

I used this as a start, then created my own bag (we have five in our family). I would feel very safe with just the contents that came in the bag though. The things I added were just "extras" that were important to me.

If you don't have a 72 hour kit - go ahead and purchase this one. It will get you at least moderately prepared and you can build from there. The bag is small, so it will easily fit in almost any trunk and I "think" would probably even fit in a motorcycle carrier. So, just like jumper cables should be in every trunk, this would be an easy way to be a little more safe. The food products and water are good for five years, so you don't have to think about it and rotate things out every six months as you would with something like bottled water. Quakehold! 70280 Grab-'n-Go Emergency Kit, 2-Person, 3-Day Backpack

This kit has almost everything you need for an emergency. It is compact, and easy to take with you. I only needed to add an emergency radio, flashlight and some batteries. It is a time saver also. It is easier than trying to gather all the products that are included in it. A real bargain!

Hello

I highly recommend this Grab and Go pack, just to have in the car or home in case of emergency. My comment about the size notwithstanding, it has everything to get me by for a few days should something nasty happen. I have supplemented it with my own first aid and fire starting additions, and it should prove handy if I ever need it.

I purchased this as kind of a starter kit, and while it helps to give you an idea of some useful things to put together, it really falls short in delivering several of them. What I found was that it had the cheapest possible versions of everything it was providing. After getting this and looking what was in it, I pretty much started from scratch with a new bag (the one that came with the kit has a single stitch that was already failing when I first opened it with a 3-inch tear by the zipper).

For ~$40, you get a good starter kit, though:

Emergency food bars

Water

Emergency Blankets

VERY basic first aid kit

Light sticks

Dust masks

Nitrile gloves

Whistle

Ponchos

Tissue

My problems are as follows:

The backpack was falling apart from the get-go.

The first aid kit was too basic to be very useful (it's the kind that you might toss in your back pocket for daily carry).

The emergency blankets are pretty standard and cheap to buy.

The 12-hour light sticks are easily and cheaply upgraded to the 200hr LED glow sticks for $5 per 3-pack at Home Depot.

Dust masks can be had at the dollar store.

Gloves are really cheap (the ones that came in my kit were replaced immediately as they were just too cheap to rely on).

The whistle is just a whistle.

Ponchos are pretty standard and cheap to buy.

Tissue could be replaced with a ziplock bag of tissues and be just as effective.

If you're looking to build a cheap emergency kit, look at the individual contents of this and decide what you need. If I were ever to rely on this, I would be a bit afraid. That said, after buying this I had a lot of fun rebuilding it with an "I can get better" attitude and ended up spending quite a bit more buying "better" versions of its contents and filling some gaps. $40 isn't too bad a price to get at least part way there, but I can't see why they even bothered with such a low quality backpack to hold it all, as I'm pretty sure I use higher quality grocery bags.

This product makes no false statements. You get what it says. It is very much only for an emergency. The bag is small enough to make it a daily travler in any car. The first aid kit is just enough for basic cuts and such. The bag has about a 4" by 4" section to keep additional items like a multi-tool and flashlight. Do not expect a large bag for "survial" equipment, it is a basic emergency kit.

I order "Quakehold! 70280 Grab-n-Go Emergency Kit" for $45 but then also ordered "Deluxe 2-Person by SurvivalKitsOnline Perfect Survival Kit for Emergency Disaster Preparedness" for $99 and you get so much more with that puppy. The Quakehold pack is 1/4 the size and full. The SurvivalKitsOnline pack is larger with way more pockets and has room for other items to be added. I stuffed the Quake items into the SurvivalKitsOnline pack. Also added a knife sharpenter and military compass, 5-in-1 shovel, bowie knife, 150 feet of rope and cord, all-weather gloves, plus more to be added. It still has room. Sure the pack tops around 40+ #'s but you have everything in it. Prepare your bug-out kit bB4 you need it people!!

This is great for an emergency, the pack has the vital things like water food bars. enough for three days

I think this pack is a great starting point. I think it would be good to create your own grab and go. I put things in there that are not included in this pack. plus I bought my own back pack which is far larger.

This pack is small. Some of the items in my larger pack quality compass paracord leatherman 300 multi tool waterproof matches. magnifying glass. water treatment tablets extra emergency blankets flint starter. A small hammer

Extra bandages, I am not finished with this yet, but you get the idea things you may not be able to do without

in any emergency situation. I do recomend the quake kit!!!But also make your own you can never be over prepared.

This kit has a bunch of good stuff that would have taken me weeks to find, buy and figure out and probably cost me a whole lot more. I like the convenience and mix of products. I added some personal stuff to the kit and put it in my car. With all the threats of attack, earthquakes, fires and floods, I don't think you can ever be too prepared! The only thing I added were goggles because I remember the people from 9-11 trying to escape with all the dust in their eyes.'

Thunderbolt Screen Protector - thunderbolt screen protector

I just finished installing my Steinheil screen protector on my Thunderbolt. It went smoothly and the kit comes with everything you need including a squeegee card and little stickers you can use to remove any dust from the side of the protector that faces the phone. I got mine on with absolutely no bubbles!

This screen protector does feel great to the touch and totally eliminates glare and fingerprints.

The downside is that it DOES reduce the brightness and the clarity of the screen. It's hard to describe but everything seems a little grainy. If you look at a white screen for example, you can see very clearly the subtle effect the protector has across the whole screen. Brightness is reduced - I had to turn mine up from 15% to 20% for indoor use but it's not bad.

All in all I think I can get used to the negatives mentioned above because the positives outweigh them.

If you like a slick, bright screen that looks exactly like the screen without a protector, this is not the product for you. Better to go with something like the Seidio screen protector for Thunderbolt. It's a fingerprint magnet but doesn't reduce screen brightness or cause anything to look grainy. SGP HTC Thunderbolt Screen Protector Steinheil Ultra Series [Ultra Fine]

This screen protector works great. does what it says and it is anti-glare as well as resistant to fingerprints. you can use your phone and not have to wipe off the smudges and prints because there isnt a single one.

This screen protector is great. The Thunderbolt's screen is a fingerprint magnet and is so reflective it's hard to read the screen. With this screen protector fingerprints are a non-issue and the screen is much easier to read. The screen also feels much better to the touch - this screen protector makes it much easier to use the touch screen.

The installation is easy and doesn't need any glue etc that some other screen protectors require - it just slides right on and can be easily removed with no residue.

Ok I didnt know this was a two pack. I thought I was only purchasing one. Good thing it was too because (I never applied one of these before)I screwed the first one up by letting dust cling to the adhesive side. Very important to do this is a very clean and dust free area. (if you have access to a clean room, use it) Dust in the air clings to the adhesive side quite easily and you wont notice it until it's already applied on your phone and you have a bubble on the screen. That's where I screwed. Tried applying it while sitting in front of the TV sitting on the sofa. Some lint or dust got under it along with a hair and I had to scrap the first one. Second one worked out pretty good though. It does add a different texture to your screen but does not take away from the functionality of the touchscreen at all. Picture is still crisp and the touchscreen is still just as responsive.

Definitely worth spending $15.00 to protect my $500 interplanetary telecommunication device.

4 stars only because it is pretty difficult to keep it dust free while applying.

I've owned this product for about a week now. The screen protector is pretty durable and it does resist fingerprints very well. The only reason I gave it 3-stars is because it does deteriorate the screen clarity quite a bit. The screen becomes a little fuzzy/grainy. I've gotten used to it at this point but I may be looking for another screen protector within the next few months.

I tried a couple different screen protectors for my thunderbolt and was not happy with them. The ones from Best Buy required you to spray the protector with a liquid. I wasn't going to put that anywhere near my brand new thunderbolt. The ones from the verizon were okay but they seemed to get scratched easily and they don't cover the home, menu, search buttons below the screen. I also had some bubbles I couldn't get rid of.

With the SGP, it fits perfectly. At first I thought it was a little short but it turns out the bottom of the thundebolt's screen is beveled so it actually fits just right. I was very careful during installation and have no bubbles at all on the screen. The matte finish does a good job of resisting fingerprints. Even at the end of the day when it gets dust and smudges on it, I just wipe it down with a micro fiber cloth and it looks brand new. No scratches at all!

I got this screen protector about a month ago. It's price is a bit high but if you can get it installed well, it's great. 2 came to a pack. I got the first one installed pretty easily but within a few weeks at most, the protector started to peel off of the sides. I've never had this happen with a screen protector before. I couldn't get the lint off with the provided dust removal stickers, so in the trash it went. I cleaned the screen well, made sure my hands were clean and went to install the 2nd protector and it was a difficult experience. I must've had beginner's luck the first time. I followed the instructions explicitly, but lint kept getting on the adhesive side as I was slowly peeling the protective backing off to install the protector. I used the provided dust remove sticker, but couldn't get it all off, so now I've got a screen protector that cost over $15 for 2, that I wish looked better than it did. I do not mind the reduction in brightness at all, because I don't see any glare or reflection on the screen. What I do mind is how long it took me to install the protector, but still getting lint on it that wouldn't come off, thus not being able to remove all the bubbles from the screen protector because the lint wouldn't come off. I really wish this weren't the case because otherwise, I like the screen protector. No fingerprints! No glare! But a pain to install and a high price to go with it. - Thunderbolt Screen Protector'

Over-the-head Headphones - skull candy, headphones

So i ordered these headphones after my first set of headphones broke. i was a little unsure because the ratings on the other Skullcandy headphones were pretty bad. They took about five days to get to my house and I LOVE THEM. The sound is great, and the entire set is made very well. The only problem is that the part that goes over your ear feels a bit hollow because the pads and the circle with the Skullcandy logo is removable, so if you drop it at a weird angle there is a chance that the outside could crack. They come with a stereo adapter, a nice carrying bag, and there is a bottle opener concealed in a sipper pocket on the headband. The headband is great and fits perfectly due to its flexibility, and you can adjust the sides. The headphones can swivel and flip and they only have one cord so it doesn't get all tangled up. Overall these are great headphones with good sound and i would recommend buying them, especially at this low price! Skullcandy G.I. Stereo Headphones S6GICZ-003 (Black)

(written by Shim's daughter, Samantha)

I will say, these headphones go for 70$ on the Skullcandy website. This alone ingratiates me to the price of 40$ a bit, but this is besides the point.

The sound quality is fine, it's clear, and as long as you're not used to sound canceling headphones, I don't really think there's anything to complain about. I appreciate being able to adjust the angle of the headphones so that they fit better to my head. It's also nice for when (I don't know if I'm the only one who likes doing this) you shift the headset sideways, so you can still listen with one ear and listen to your surroundings with your other ear. (>_>)

They're really sturdy. /Really Sturdy/ leading into my next point.

The headphones are a little hard on the temples. I'm somewhat headache prone myself, so I was pretty concerned when I put them on for the first time. HOWEVER. These headphones are not delicate by a long shot, and I was stubborn. (I'm one who is dramatically against not using the things other people have been so kind to give me) I 'stretched' the headband out. This would entail gripping the sections of the headband right above the ear pieces, and pulling outwards, just enough so that ear pieces, rather than being curved inwards, are perpendicular to the floor. You can hold it this way for a little while, and then try them on again. It might take a couple of tries, but it really does work.

Anyways. The design is nice, there are also skull designs on the insides of the ear pieces too. ...and there's a bottle opener hidden in a small pocket in the headband, by the way.

I own many headphones, ranging from the cheap iPod earbuds to the super expensive Beats Pro headphones. I got these because I had an amazon gift card and i just wanted to try them out. The retail price is 70 dollars on skullcandy's website but i got these for just 40. These headphones are great for the price. They're really comfy, and have pretty good sound quality. In fact, i think these are much better then my Beats Solo because they're much cheaper and they're much more durable. This specific model of G.I's didn't come with a cord extender so if you want a set of GIs with cord extenders, i suggest you get the rasta version. Overall, these were amazing headphones for the price. Go skullcandy!!

Well, I bought this headphones a while back. This headphones have a decent sound and a very cool design (and I think that's why people buy them).

At the begging I had to adjusted them every 20 minutes cause they caused me a deep headache, I did it until I figured out that I had adjust them in the four level line on each side to stop the headache.

Caution: When I opened the box I noticed a white line in right side where you adjust the cups (right above the second level line on the right cup). I thought that was some kind of plastic color or something, but then it started to crack right there in that white line, so take this in consideration.

Overall this headphones do the job, but I think Skullcandy can make them better (sound and making) as they make them fashion.

These headphones arrived today and they are fantastic. The description matches the quality to a tee, and the discount from Amazon compared to the SkullCandy website is a definite bonus. They arrived on schedule, and the tracking information was kept up to date.

i was a little nervous when i dedcided to by these headphones becasue of some of the negetive comments, but let me assure you i am very happy that i decided to by them. even though they might not have the sound of a $300 set of head phones, for $50 you couldn't as for more. the bass is good and overall sound quailty is satisfactory. i would recomend this product to anybody

These headphones are fantastic. You can't beat this price. The headphones are multi-funtional and all promises given about this product are true. Our 14 year old son is not easy on audio equipment and such, but these have even stood up to his abuse. - Gi - Skull Candy - Headphones - Over-the-head Headphones'

Kindle Devices

Having been a little overwhelmed by the choices between all the new Kindles and which one to get, I ordered this new basic $79 Kindle first to take for a spin. So far, I like what I see. I also own a Kindle 3 so that's the only device I can really compare it to at this time (I think a comparison between other tablets and this Kindle is meaningless, this device is all about content and delivery):1. Form-factor - Compared to the Kindle 3, this Kindle feels more compact, lighter and easier to hold. My hands wrap around this better than K3. Reading books for a few hours at a stretch will be easier on this device compared to the K3. It is the lightest such device I have used compared to all previous Kindles and other tablets.2. Screen - I personally like the fact that there are no keys on the device and that keys come up on the screen when you need them. Delivers a better overall reading experience. However, navigating through the on-screen keyboard with the 5-way controller can be taxing if you need to do a lot of searching, and you might miss the full physical keyboard. I hardly search on the Kindle itself, I search for books on my laptop so this is a non-issue.3. Price! - At $79, you can't go wrong. Compared to buying paperback or hardcover editions, you will recover the cost of this in a matter of a few months because most Kindle content is priced cheaper than print editions (and you get it instantly, and can access it wherever you are). Not to mention all the free Kindle downloads available in the catalog.4. Display - almost the same E-ink display at the K3. No glare no reflection. You can sit in bright sunlight and read it just like a book. Page turns seem a lot faster on this compared to the K3. Screen size of the Kindle 3, this new Kindle, and the Touch is exactly the same in size.5. Wi-Fi - this can be a pro or a con (no 3G) depending on a user's personal preference. If you travel often and would like to be able to download content anywhere without worrying about getting a wi-fi connection, you're better off sticking with the K3 or waiting for the Touch/Fire. For me, 3G is not a major issue.6. Text to Speech and Audiobooks - These two features are lacking in this device. I personally have never used these features on my K3. If you listen to audiobooks or TTS or music on your Kindle, again the K3/Touch/Fire might be better options.7. Storage - this device can store 2GB which they claim is approximately 1400 books. For me, that's a massive storage capacity and it will be years before I get close to that capacity. Again, if you download books occasionally and have a moderate Kindle downloaded content on your device, 2GB is plenty. Of course, think ahead and see how much you would expect to download in the coming 2 years (I am assuming the device will be outdated and replaced within this time-frame).8. Battery life - too early to tell but Kindle battery life tends to be great. Specs state that the battery life of this device is 1 month compared to 2 months for the Touch or K3. 1 month is plenty (Android phones need to be charged every hour!). At least I know that if I'm going on a long flight, this device won't need charging if I charge it up in advance.9. Power adapter - this Kindle does not come with a power adapter, only a USB charging cable. You can either buy it separately for $8-10, or use your existing USB power adapter. Any USB adapter would work with the charging cable (previous Kindle versions, Apple's portable devices, and most HTC phones, come with a standard USB power adapter that would work for this device). There are also plenty of $2-3 adapters available here if you search for USB chargers.Bottom line - the choice between this basic Kindle, the K3 Keyboard, the Touch, and the Fire is really a personal preference. This device itself is meant for the minimalist Kindle user who, like me, reads say a 2-3 books a month, wants a device comfortable to hold, and doesn't need any fancy bells and whistles on the device. I guess it depends on what you use your Kindle for. If it's just the basics, this is the perfect device to get.In my humble opinion, the choices:(i) If you have a DX or an old Kindle version, or if you don't have a Kindle yet and are an average book-reader, this is definitely the one to get - baseline model that is affordable and is a pure e-reader.(ii) If you have Kindle 3 and don't really need an upgrade, I recommend sticking with the K3, it's a better device than this one in terms of features. If you do need to upgrade, the Touch is probably a better option because of all the additional features, at a small incremental cost.(iii) If you're looking for the loaded full-on Amazon content experience with access to all the apps, streaming audio and video, and playing the "strangely therapeutic" Fruit Ninja, wait for the Fire!I sincerely hope this review helps you decide whether this Kindle is right for you. If you are still unable to make a decision, it may be worthwhile to wait for the Touch and Fire to be released, and see the reviews on those devices before making a final decision. Kindle, Wi-Fi, 6" E Ink Display - includes Special Offers & Sponsored Screensavers

First off, I received my new Kindle this morning. I previously owned the Kindle Keyboard, but actually really didn't like the keyboard or the way the buttons were pressed together. I'm not a fan of touch screens so I bought this one. There are a few things to know about this particular Kindle that can help you decide if it's right for you...Here is a list of things to know about this Kindle.1. You'll be using an onscreen keyboard with the 5-Way Controller. This is not a problem for setting up WiFi and a little writing but if you are an avid note-taker or do a lot of writing with your Kindle, you might want to opt for the Kindle Keyboard.

2. NO AUDIO - If you are planning on listening to audiobooks, Mp3s, or Text to Speech on your Kindle, this is not the device for you. There is not even a headphone jack, so there is absolutely no audio support.

3. 2GB! This device has 2GB of storage, which is half of all the others... if you seriously need to keep over 1,400 books or so on your Kindle, you should opt for one of the others, all of which have 4GB. I only keep a hundred or so books on mine and the rest are up in the Amazon Cloud waiting for convenient download.

4. There's no 3G version but the WiFi works just fine.

5. There is a shorter battery life. Amazon reports the battery life is only one month of reading, compared with the others that clock in at two months. If you are going to be away from electricity for over a month, first of all RESPECT!, second of all, you may want a Kindle that has the 2 month battery life.

6. It's lighter than all the other versions. It weighs in at just under 6oz (170g). The closest competition is the Kindle Touch which is about 7.5oz.

7. It has 5 buttons on the face at the bottom. In the middle is the big 5-Way Controller button as found on other Kindles. There are two small buttons on either side of this. On the left side, from left to right are the "Back" button and the "Keyboard" button. The "Back" button is the same as on other Kindles. The "Keyboard" button calls the onscreen keyboard onto the screen. On the right side of the 5-Way Controller are (again, from left to right) the "Menu" button, and the "Home" button. The "Next Page" and "Previous Page" buttons are the same as on other Kindles.

8. Because of the above 5 buttons, I find it much easier to use than the Kindle Keyboard. On the Kindle Keyboard, the "Back" button was right below the 5-Way Controller, and I accidentally hit it on more than one occasion.

9. On the bottom there is only the mini-USB port, the charging light, and the On-Off Button.

10. There are not a whole lot of covers available for this Kindle yet. (Amazon's won't be available until the end of October.)As for reading, and as a pure reading device. It is awesome... in fact, without the keyboard, audio, and other features I don't need. This is actually the best one for someone like me who just wants to read. I've already successfully transferred my library, downloaded books over WiFi, and borrowed library books through the Overdrive Library eBooks System. My only small point of dissatisfaction is that there are so few good covers and accessories right now (though there ARE some available that look pretty good). All in all, I believe this is the BEST of all the Kindles currently available. Only consider others if you:

a. Really want the touch screen version.

b. Need audio.

c. Need 4GB

d. Need a big Kindle DX.

e. Take a lot of notes or do a lot of writing that requires a keyboard.

f. Prefer the design of another version.

g. Need more than a month's battery power.Hope this helps someone make a good decision!(Brief update: I love this Kindle, but right now the scarcity of good, inexpensive covers for it is a little troubling. The Amazon made leather one with light won't be available until November or so and there are currently no inexpensive ones to use in the interim. I'll just have to use it gently for a month or so.)'

Alkaline Batteries

I'm pretty used to buying batteries online and finding they had been made long before I ordered them (had some CR123 with experations the next month from another vendor). In at least my case, my batteries from this vendor show a production date of 3/30/10...and I ordered them on April 18th. You can't get any younger batteries (exp is Mar2016). I'll be checking this distrbutor out for the rest of my battery needs. Duracell Batteries, D Size, 8-Count Packages (Pack of 2)

I got these about three weeks ago, and still haven't used them up yet. So many batteries. Awesome. So far, they've lasted about four times as long in my Canon digital point-and-shoot than my Energizer rechargeables. And they're on track to outperform the regular Energizers in my Xbox controllers. I think I'm a coppertop convert. The price is pretty good, too--probably not the absolute cheapest, but these are real Duracells (not knockoffs) that are far from their expiration date.

If you check out local stores, you will find these are at least a bit below retail sales price for these batteries. Batteries will always be around the same price, but a few dollars off is worth getting them through Amazon!

Although I'm sure my local fire department will cringe if they read this, I buy these things for our backups for our fire alarms and they last over 4 years! Wow! Now if I buy a knockoff brand, or even Energizer, I can only get 18 months out of them before they start squealing to be replaced. Plus, this 8 battery pack makes it awfully simple to have them around when it comes time to change them, and it's the right number for my house. Love these Duracells! Highly, highly recommend!

I tend to buy batteries based on two prime criteria. First, lithium for units that will have a long down time (since lithium holds its charge well over time, I hate to be surprised by an emergency flashlight that doesn't work); alkaline, for everyday appliances (it doesn't last as long, but the cost benefit ratio is beneficial). Second,I shop for a good price. Duracell alkalines are top of the line batteries that I prefer for all my everyday item, like remotes, clocks, mini-amps, etc. This particular offering is a great price, that I haven't matched anywhere.

Very highly recommended.

Live in foothills. After going through 3 days of no power and new storm coming, looked for D batteries and they were all sold out. Like the convenience of having enough and the price was right at Amazon!

Although I mostly use nimh cells these days for their higher current capacity and their green qualities of not being thrown away, there are things that still need alkaline batteries. Remote controlls can run 2 years on a set (although the eneloop cells are an option). Some flashlights need the 1.5 vs the 1.2 volt difference in alkaline cells and nimh. Also some times you don't have 4 charged up batteries ready to go, so alkaline is the alternative you pay for not keeping a set charged up.

I bought these when I bought my dad a weather station - it had about 5 outdoor devices, all used 2 ea alkaline batteries to run the radio remote weather sensors that transmit to the base station which used 4 AAs for backup if AC fails.

These are fresh date code, healthy cells and fill the bill just fine when you need them. NOTE - in some places where the outdoor equipment was hard to get to (have to climb on roof) I used the L91bp lithium alternative Energizer L91BP-8 Lithium AA Photo Battery (8-Pack) which you get about 8 cells for the price of 20 here, but they last 8 times longer, saving alot of trips to the roof to change the batteries. The down low sensors got alkaline cells instead. It's important to choose the right cell based on intended use, and this is one example. Also I have a temp sensor in the refrigerator that runs on lithium cells due to the low temp - they work fine at freezing temps, and will radio the temp to the weather station which has alarms set if the freezer fails.'

Highlighter Pocket-style - highlighter pocket-style, office supplies

I am a bit of a office supply junkie, and I have tried about every kind of highlighter I can find - one of the reasons I picked these. They are cheap, which I guess is handy, but highlighters are not that expensive anyway. The ink pools up, they bleed through even quality regular paper (I tried on Hammermill Premium even), and they seem pretty easy to break. With liquid ink highlighters, it's sort of a gamble in your bag anyway, but these don't seem like a good one. Spend an extra few cents if you want super cheap and get Zebra Zazzle or Sharpie Accents if you must see the ink for some reason. Vivo Vx Liquid Ink Highlighters, 5-Color Set, 18095

I'm a professional student who learns best when I can add color to my text. You know the type. I'm the one who puts all the marks in the used books that you avoid. Green on vocab, yellow on test responses, blue on stuff to clarify..etc. These markers are the best! They're wet, they're bright, and they dry fast enough that you can turn the page without worrying. I can't walk past them in the store and the price here was the best I've seen in a while. Must have for artistic learners! - Highlighter Pocket-style - Office Supplies - Highlighters - Markers'
