The handset routinely stops communicating with the base station, at least once every other day and often more frequently. This happens in mid-call or between calls, whether the handset is on the base or not, whether the battery is fully charged or not, with no warning. You fix it by disconnecting the power from the base station for about 10 seconds, then reconnecting and giving the handset about 15 seconds to find the base station again. Then it works fine for a random period of time, ranging from minutes to a couple of days, and then does it again.
I bought it from Target in-store and tossed the receipt (silly me). Just ordered a replacement Panasonic phone with similar features and will toss this phone as soon as the Panasonic arrives. Like another reviewer, I had a lot of trouble with this phone where the handset would spontaneously "de-register" itself with the base station. Re-registering requires navigating through a bunch of menus on the handset and pressing a button on the base station. Not a unreasonable task for initial setup, but it gets very tiresome when you need to complete this process almost every time you want to use the phone. Plus, while the phone is de-registered it doesn't ring if you receive any calls.
Also, sometimes the phone would produce a very loud high-frequency noise when picked up, rather than a dial tone. The only way I could find to fix this was to unplug the base station from AC and then plug it back in. The phone would often take this opportunity to de-register the handset again.
It's too bad, because if the phone weren't so unreliable it'd be very nice. It has some nifty features like an area code setting (so caller ID call-back can actually work correctly). The unreliability is a show-stopper, though, so I returned the phone. The fact that others have run into the same de-registering problem suggests that I didn't just get a lemon so I'll be buying a different brand to replace it.
My phone did the same thing as everyone else describes. I'm glad to know it is just this particular phone. It was a great phone with some cool features if it just worked! It dropped calls, static upon pickup , and deregistered at least three or four times a day.
This phone is great if you like suspense: You never know, when the phone rings, whether this will work or not. Brace yourself for the sound of your caller, or silence, or that annoying beep-beep-beep that translates to, "you're not going to be able to figure out what's wrong with me!!"
Seriously, I hate this phone with the heat of 1,000 suns. I had a great cordless GE phone once. And also, this one got good reviews on Consumer Reports -- so I don't know what the deal is. They used to make them well. Did they forget how?
I also agree with the others! I bought this phone becuase it looked sleek and modern. I loved the blue backlighting and the whole design. I got it home and after about a day it just stopped registering. I missed numerous calls. When I saw the light flashing that a call was coming in yet there was no ringing when I picked it up it just beeped. I had to unplug the whole phone to reset it. It got worse as the days went on.
This morning it disconnected 3 times on its own in an hour!!!!!!!!!!! Each time I had to reset it. I returned it to Target where I bought it and bought a fantastic vtech dect 6.0 with additional handset. Never again will I buy a GE product!
We literally threw ours in the trash. I would hate to have someone pay good money for it at a thrift store and find out it doesn't work. Oh, it stays charged and all that. There's just no dial tone most of the time. We tried plugging it in several locations in the house, in case of interference or thick walls or something. It doesn't find a dial tone, no matter whether you are near the cradle or not. We missed phone calls for months without figuring out what was going on. The messages go to voicemail (our local provider) but the phone doesn't ring most of the time. And you want to make a call? Sorry, most of the time it just says "Searching..." and can't get any signal. Gee, I can understand that for a cell phone, but not for my land line.
Got the phone-charged it for 24 hrs. Worked ok for 1-2 days then would start to have excessive static in receiver. Would have to reset by unplugging charger assy from ac-outlet which involved moving our couch to do it. It became a real bummer so I sent it in to warranty place .Haven't heard from warranty place either.Looks like a wasted purchase.
I purchased this GE cordless phone new on line and I wished that I would have read the reviews on it before I ordered it. I trusted it to be an excellent phone because of the brand GE. I'm giving it a 1 star rating but I feel that 1 star is too much due to not being able to use it. If it only worked it has some great features which also led me to purchase it. I'm having the same problems as the rest of the reviews are having. It shuts down quite often and you have to pull the plug and then reconnect the power to reset the handset connection to the base. You can't depend on this phone at all. I tried moving it different places in my house thinking it might have some kind of interference from another source but still didn't work. I bought another different brand cordless phone from Radio Shack and this one works fine(No problems whatsoever). No more GE for me. - Cordless Phone - Cordless Telephones - Answering Machine - Dect Cordless Phone'
