There is apparently a lot of confusion over what these adapters can do. I believe the problem is that there are two different wiring standards (pin-outs) for 2.5mm audio plugs and jacks: stereo headphones (two earpieces and no mic) vs. stereo or mono telephone headsets (one or two earpieces and a mic). The 2.5mm male plug's tip and rings are the same dimensions/position, but wired differently.
On a 2.5mm plug with a tip and two rings, the contacts can be wired as earpiece, mic and common, or as left earpiece, right earpiece and common. You'd need a 2.5mm plug with a tip and three rings for a stereo telephone phone headset, just like the 3.5mm version.
Thus, an adapter such as this one will only work with one type of connection, and you cannot tell by looking at it. To make matters worse, some products come with audio controls (mute, forward/reverse or stop/start), and those standards vary.
THIS product does work to convert a mono, 2.5mm plug-equipped headset (earpiece and mic) to work with a 3.5mm jack, such as that found on an iPhone or certain iPod Touch models (like my 4th gen). It does NOT work to convert a stereo 2.5mm plug headset (two earpieces and no mic) to play stereo from the 3.5mm jack. I don't have a stereo 2.5mm telephone headset, so I can't test that combo, but it should work. This is not a fault of this product; it's the fault of the lack of a standard for 2.5mm plugs. I hope this makes sense.
SO, if you have a 2.5mm plug, wired telephone headset you'd like to use with a 3.5mm jack-equipped device, this is the adapter to buy. Malcom Distributors 2.5mm Female to 3.5mm Male 3 rings Jack Stereo Adapter On/Off enabled - Convert 2.5 mm Stereo Cell Phone Headset to 3.5 mm MP3 Stereo Earpiece Earphones Input Jack for iPhone 1G 3G 3Gs, Blackberry, Motorola Droid, Palm Pixi, HTC Eris Nexus One
My employer gave me yet another new phone, a Samsung Epic, and of course the audio jack is a different size than my previous phone, a Blackberry.
This adapter works perfectly -- I can now use my favorite Plantronics wired headset with microphone.
Service was typical Amazon: Impeccable.
Just received this and it works. I tried other adaptors from Amazon.com that either carried no sound, or had unacceptable interference. This connected my Entymotic headset to an IPhone 4 and the sound is very clear.
I almost feel like the reviews here are for the wrong headset. I took a gamble and ordered two as they were a little over $3 at the time. I had ordered 1 adapter from eBay also but I know how these type of adapters can be dual channel instead of triple channel. When this is the case, you get only one earpiece working when you plug a stereo plus mic into it. This was not this case. I plugged my 2.5 mm stereo plus mic headset, and now can use them with my HTC Hero 3.5 for stereo music and talking on phone. The one I ordered from eBay did not work even though it also had the TRRS ending (this means 4 separate contact points or the number of rings. Tip Ring Ring Sleeve is the official name. Look up "TRS connector" on Wikipedia for more information).
The short of it. My TRRS 2.5mm jacked stereo headset plus mic transforms great to a TRRS 3.5 for use with my HTC Hero cell phone. I also tried it with an old single ear plus mic headset and it works great with that one two. So now all the old single headset/mic as well as the couple of stereo headset/mic that I have, can be used with our new phones. I am here to order 2 more as I have a lot of old single ear with boom-mic headsets.
Maybe the bad reviews are because the company sent the wrong adapter? Or it was a different company than the one that sent to me. I would call and complain as this one states that it converts Stereo cell phone headsets to stereo. The company that sent me mine was "DollarRite" "Shipped and sold by"
Hope this helps.
I have a Samsung rogue and I keep losing the bluetooth...so I decided to use an old wired Verizon headset with 2.5 mm...mono, single ear, single mic..the type with two rings...the rogue uses a 3 ring 3.5 set up so based on other users I figured what the heck..Well, It works just fine...in fact, the little button on the cord to initiate voice dialing even works...Thanks to Steve W, Mr Weinberg for his great review (the first one you see..)...Acc Net, the seller was great..had the cord in 4 days..
I DON'T THINK I'VE EVER LEFT A BAD REVIEW BUT HERE IT GOES...EVEN AFTER ALL THE BAD REVIEWS THERE STILL WASN'T MUCH OF A SELECTION AND WENT WITH THIS ADAPTER FOR MY 14 YR. OLD DAUGHTER'S T-MOBILE G1 CELL PHONE. IT WORKED APPROXIMATELY 3 WEEKS WITH NO PROBLEMS, SHE LOVED BEING ABLE TO JAM OUT ON THE BUS HOME EVERYDAY. THEN OUT OF NO WHERE JUST LIKE THE OTHER REVIEWS IT JUST CRUMBLED INTO PIECES ON DAY ON THE BUS AFTER SCHOOL WHEN SHE TRIED PLUGGING IT IN. SHE SAID IT BROKE IN A WAY THAT SHE COULDN'T REALLY RECOVER ALL THE PLASTIC PIECES ON THE SCHOOL BUS. SO THERE OBVIOUSLY WAS NO WAY TO EXACTLY RETURN IT BACK TO THE SELLER FOR A REFUND, SO I HAVEN'T TRIED! IF YOU NEED SOMETHING TEMPORARY FOR A COUPLE BUCKS, THIS WILL WORK AND WORK GOOD JUST NOT FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. I JUST ORDERED ANOTHER FROM ANOTHER AMAZON SELLER, LET'S SEE HOW THAT ONE HOLDS UP??? - Telephone Headset - Adapter - Hands Free - Stereo'
