These toners are easy to install. One thing though, after the first warning of these toners being low I take them out and check the little round window to see if there is still toner. If there is, I wind back the gear with a peg on it back to its original position. I recently did this with all three colors as it was reported they were going low. After winding back the gears, the printer performed perfectly for another month with a moderate amount of color printing. Finally, the low toner warnings went off again and since there appeared no more toner, I installed new ones. I have a closet full of these consumables and look forward to many great years printing with these printers. (We have 6 of them)
*EDIT 12/20/10*
We've 3 more of the 9840cdw printers now. Here is something important you should know along with the above information:
Hidden Menus for Brother 9840cdw-
**Toner Reset Menu - Open front door of printer. Press the 'clear' button once or twice. There are two capacities for each color. It will start counting down from whichever you choose.
**Everything Else Reset Menu - Press '3' and '9' at the same time. Hidden reset menu will appear. Select item, select reset. Brother TN-115BK High Yield Black Toner Cartridge for Brother HL4040CN,HL4070CDW Series
A trick to get more pages when printer dispalys 'toner life end'. With the toner access door open, press the clear/back button, from here you can reset each color / high yield or regular. Just follow the menu.
When the toner life end message comes up, there are 2 things that need to be done to keep printing. The windows on each side of the cartridge need to be blocked (with electric tape or something similar). And the flag gear on the cartridge needs to be reset. Here is how to do that:
1. Orient cartridge so that you are looking at the end of the cartridge with the 2 phillips head screws, one at the top right, one at the bottom left. You should also see part of the gray flag gear through an opening in the end cap.
2. Remove screws and the end cap they were holding in place (one or 2 gears may fall out when you do this, but they should be simple to pop back into place).
3. Note attachment point of the spring over flag gear, then temporarily remove it so you can reset the gear.
4. Remove the flag gear and reinstall it so that its teeth are just beginning to mesh with the adjoining gear.
5. Reinstall the spring.
6. Reinstall the end cap.
You can also reset the cartridge from the printer. But this will only temporarily override the toner end of life message and allow you to print a few more pages. Here are the instructions for that:
1. With power on, open the toner access main door (You will get a "door open" message in the LCD.)
2. Hit the "Clear/Back" button and you go right to the "Toner Reset Menu"
3. Using the up & down "Search" arrow buttons, you can then scroll through reset options for each of the printer's [4] toner cartridges.
Code: B-TNR-H = black, C-TNR-H = cyan; M-TNR-H = magenta and Y-TNR-H = yellow. The H is for high yield.
4. Highlight the toner you want to reset and hit the OK button.
5. Hit the "Clear/Back" button to get out of the menu, close door.
2nd cartridge I bought since owning my machine leaked all over a fax I received. Maybe it is just a one time defect??? I buy only new, not remanufactured or used. I will try one more order and if any more problems I will not buy from Amazon.com anymore. I am very disappointed and hoping it will not happen again.
This cartridge was rated for 5000 pages. I don't think that I have gotten more than 300 pages printed before the cartridge failed. I don't blame Amazon for this, but I sincerely hope that they will have a look into the supplier practices. The cartridge looked reconstituted upon further inspection.
This is the 1st toner refill I have had to purchase for our Laser Fax machine. The original toner cartridge included with the Laser Fax stated it was a starter cartridge and good for about 1,000 pages. Well it lasted for over 2,500 pages before the print was starting to fade which I thought was pretty good for a starter cartridge.
The new cartridge is supposed to be a high yield cartridge. I noticed that the two cartridges seemed to weigh about the same. I weighed them on a certified butcher scale and the new high yield cartridge weighed only 4oz. more than the empty starter cartridge. This does not seem to be very much toner. I wrote to Brother and they failed to respond to my inquiry. I will have to see how many pages I get out of this cartridge.
Would be interested to know if any one else has done a weight comparison between their used and their new cartridge.
I owned a 9840CDW for almost two years. The print quality is really bad. After a few hundred pages, I see streaks run down the pages. I also see stains. This happens to the original black and blue toners. After I replaced them, the problem went away for only a few hundred pages. Then it came back for black toner. I checked the manual and found that we have to clean two areas. One is the drum unit. It produces equally spaced stains on the page. The other is the spill of the toner. I have to constantly clean it.
Brother has a unique design that toner cartridges and drum units are separate. So you don't have to replace them all together like other brands. . All the Brother color printers share this design. They all use the same toner cartridges and drum units. It apparently reduces the production cost greatly. But it seems to me that with this design toner cartridges and drum units are very flimsy. I have done the cleaning of toner carriages and drum unit so many times that I can do that without taking out the drum unit. I never have to do this to other laser printers. And I never know so much detail about laser printers before I own a Brother printer.
If unfortunately you own one and would like to keep it, the other thing you have to watch out is the cost of toner. It will stop working after a preset number of pages even you still have a lot of toner in it. You can follow the instruction below to reset the toner cartridge. It will save you a lot of money.
Amazon won't let me post the url. Please search the web for the instruction. You have to open the cap and turn back the wheel in the cartridge. Good luck. - Laser Printer - Laser All-in-one - Toner - Color Laser Printer'
