At first, I was proud of myself that I was able to perform a do-it-yourself screen replacement, everything worked just fine. After about a week, though, I was no longer able to perform the "drag down" action to unlock the screen on a consistent basis; on the rare chance it did work, the "OK" and delete buttons stopped working on the security code screen--in brief, completely locked out of my phone. Opened up the phone again to check, and found that the ribbon connecting the digitizer to the motherboard had become ripped.
So not only will I be paying Sprint full cost for the repairs (I don't have time or patience to try DIY again), I'm also out $40 in sunk costs (screen, tools, adhesives). Not happy. HTC Evo 4g Replacement Touch Screen Digitizer Lens Part
The product is perfect. Couldn't say more about it. This is a very manageable do-it-yourself project. However, some of you who are going to be looking at the YouTube videos need to be aware of a couple things.
First off, the process that is shown in the YouTube video by the English accented guy is shown as being WAY too easy. This is because the screen in the video is intact. If you're like me, the reason that you bought this product is that you (or someone else) were an idiot and dropped your phone resulting in a spider webbed screen. Because of this, it's not just a matter of going around the edges of the glass with the safe pry tool. It's harder than that because you have all of the loose shards that are going to interfere with your safe pry too. When you get to them, stop and get a tweezers to lift them off of the tape.
Speaking of tape, it's the most important aspect of the repair. The glass fits over the LCD screen. There is a thin layer of adhesive tape that is similar to double-sided electrical tape that has been perfectly installed to go around the edges of the LCD screen. The video just says that it's adhesive, but that doesn't explain it well enough--it's tape. What you have to do is pry the top of the tape from bottom of the broken glass NOT the bottom of the tape from the top of the LCD. If you don't disturb that tape, you'll have a perfect install. It can be hard to get between the glass and the tape. You may need some hot air from a hair dryer. Try to start at a place with a good length of intact glass, close to the middle of the long edge of the phone. If you don't manage to get between the glass and the tape and some of the tape comes up, try to get it as close to where it was before. If you don't, you might have a piece of tape that blocks the LCD from coming through and that'll be annoying because you'll see it when you try to use the phone (i.e., the edges of the screen will not be straight).
Good luck!
I got this in the mail and was able to easily and quickly swap it out thanks to the instructions on ifixit.com. I can't believe how much Sprint gets away with charging to replace these when it's so easy. The pack of tools that came with it was very handy as well. It took me about 15-20 minutes to do the job.
I ordered this replacement screen for the HTC EVO by Sprint. It arrived in a VERY timely manner, so shipping was fast. The part arrived packaged safely, wrapped in bubble wrap inside a UPSP flat rate box. The screen was a perfect fit. The only thing that would make this even better is if they included the adhesive with the screen!!! Worth the money as the screen has been replaced for almost a month now with no problems! Thank you for such a great product at a fair price.
Digitizer and glass work great. Looks and works just as good as the first day I bought my phone.
Only down side is it did not come with any adhesive, I had to cut up some extra adhesive I had laying around.
This is perfect for anyone who has a cracked HTC EVO screen. Install wasn't too difficult - the hardest part was getting the old screen off. Protip: use a hair dryer to loosen up the existing adhesive to make it easier to pry up.
Unfortunately, adhesive was not included (I saw it somewhere recently for $3) but I made do and used the adhesive from the old screen. This left some gaps and now my screen is COVERED in light dust on the inside (I was very careful to wipe down the inside glass with an alcohol wipe prior to install and was working in a very clean environment). This means I'm going to have to redo this install just to add some tape. I wish this was more clearly stated in the ad. Long story short: learn from my fail.
There is a film covering the backside of the digitizer that has to be removed before placing on the lcd. I didn't notice it at first and when I turned on the phone there were fine vertical lines. After removing the film it works perfectly. Also I noticed some people said they received tools, I received nothing besides the screen so your order may vary.
As others mentioned, screen worked great at first, so i thought, took me about 30min to replace, first time i booted up the touch did not work so i took it apart again and re entered the ribbon and made sure the lock was on correctly and all worked great after that until i noticed how inaccurate the screen has become. I now cannot even try and type a small txt because of it. Last night the screen was doing things on its own like a ghost took control of it, it actually made phone calls to people and has become so bad i have to figure out something else. sell it or replace the digitizer again.
THERE IS TWO SMALL TAPES on the screen protector that you must peal off to use over the ribbons :)'
