I decided that I needed an second USB cable the moment my Kindle 3 was delivered because I need one to charge it with the power adapter and I am using a USB to transfer files to it from my computer. Of course, the same USB cable could be used to do both but I didn't like the idea of constantly plugging the wire in and out of the charger, not to mention having to keep track of its whereabouts. One penny plus S&H seems to be just about right, as far as the price is concerned so... I decided to splurge and ordered me one extra.
By the way, this is a STANDARD USB TYPE A to Micro-B (NOT Mini) wire so it doesn't have to be 'for Kindle' specifically. In fact, I am using the Kindle charger with the 'Kindle cable' attached to charge my Blackberry. Compared to the 'original' wire that came with my Kindle, this one is 3 ft. long (2 ft. shorter than the Kindle-supplied) and a little thicker but it doesn't really matter.
To conclude, get this one if, for whatever reason you need an extra cable for your Kindle or if you just need a USB TYPE A to Micro-B cable for anything or get it from elsewhere if you can get it any cheaper. Oriongadgets Sync & Charge USB Cable for Amazon Kindle 2 (White)
We bought 3 of these Kindle 2 USB cable to have as spares since more often than not we were forgetting to pack the original one when going on trips. Now we put one in each car and in a pocket of our suitcase and know that we will have one when we arrive.
The cables are about 3' long and seem to have good quality connectors on the USB and Kindle plugs. The wire is a little thin, but I have no reason to suspect that there will be any problems.

I have all my various chargers in one place in my office and it was a lot of trouble to disconnect the cable every time I needed to connect my Kindle to my computer. This cord is perfect, a little shorter than the one that came with my Kindle but perfect for my needs, and the price was right . And yes it works fine with a K3.
I read the reviews before buying this item and was wanting a cable that wouldn't break and split open like the defective one sent to me with my new kindle. (I purchased the kindle 4 months ago, so the cable lasted 4 months before splitting open and becoming a fire hazard). Otherwise, I would have never purchased this cable at all.
I realize that this purchase was only a few dollars, but that $3 was basically flushed down the toilet as this cable is a poor imitation of the cable that you receive with your new kindle.
As mentioned by others, the cable is way too short (almost half the length of the one given to you with a new kindle). The connector does not fit flush against the plug which plugs into the electrical wall outlet. Last, the rubberized coating looks even more brittle and flimsy than the original kindle cable which is a piece of junk and a fire hazard).
I won't be using this product and have wasted my time and money on it.
the original USB cable for my kindle2 became damaged. the replacement cable that i ordered from OrionGadgets, although shorter, is superior to the original, as it is much sturdier and connects more solidly to the kindle device. (the original cable was longer than it needed to be anyway.) i'm very pleased with the new cable. thank you.
