Mini Displayport - audio, mini displayport

If you have a new Macbook from April 2010+, and are looking for an adapter for HDMI W/ audio THIS IS THE ONE. I spent 30 minutes looking through Amazon to make sure it would be the right one, so let me save you the trouble and say it is!

Make sure you go to settings and switch audio to "HDMI out".

Now the problem... It's not a problem with this product at all (thus the 5 star rating). The Macbook won't control the volume with the keyboard through HDMI out, you have to control it from the TV/Monitor/external speakers. Not sure why, I guess that's just how Digital audio works. This was a surprise to me, so I wanted to let you all know that.

The audio sounds fantastic! Menotek Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Converter cable (for Unibody MacBook - Pro - Air etc.) - IMPROVED WITH AUDIO

I purchased this for my 2010 MacBook Pro. The first one that I received was defective but the replacement I received from the seller worked perfectly. I can now hook up my MacBook to my 1080p HDTV without needing an additional audio cable.

I would have given this 5 stars if not for the defective one I received.

Great quality product. Does as described. It's a shame that Apple decides: 1) not to ship with a simple HDMI connector; 2) NOT ship the MacBook Pro's with a DisplayPort port; and 3) decide to use Mini Display, which no other monitor or TV uses, unless you're Apple. With that said, this is a great product. Thanks!Ap

After several frustrating purchases, I finally found this. YES, IT TRANSMITS AUDIO through the mini-display port in the most recent generational updates of the Macbook and Macbook Pro lines. Great product. Affordable and effective. Recommended.

Works as advertised on my 2010 MacBook Air 13" (both audio + video). When I first hooked it up I saw video, but no audio. I had to change my settings (System Preferences >> Sound >> Output >> Select HDMI) to get it to work. You only have to change this once and then whenever you plug it in, it works with audio + video on HDMI.

Works as advertised. I use this to connect my mid-2010 MacBook Pro to my home theater receiver. It passes 1080p video to the TV and I get audio through my sound system. I had to go into System Preferences "Sound" panel to select my receiver as the audio output device to get the sound to go through, but after that my MBP remembered the setting the next time I plugged it in.

Works great, and less than half the price of the Apple store equivalent.

I was looking for a MiniDP->HDMI adapter that would send sound from a compatible Mac (2010 model MacBook Pro).

I know that earlier Macs didn't send sound out of the DisplayPort, and that earlier DisplayPort->HDMI adapters didn't pass along sound even if the source DisplayPort was emitting it, and I've also seen complaints from some people saying they could get sound to work but only stereo sound. So I spent some time reading reviews on Amazon looking for adapters with the highest chance of success and decided to try one of these.

Good news: it worked fine. Connecting a 2010 MacBook Pro to an Onkyo A/V receiver, using this adapter and a standard HDMI cable, I was able to send both video and multichannel audio over HDMI, no problem.

Just as the title suggests, this Menotek Mini DisplayPort to HDMI converter cable allows you to connect your mid-2010 or later MacBook Pro via a single HDMI cable (not included), including audio.

For those who haven't been successful getting this to work on their MacBook Pros, a couple of tips:

1) If your MacBook Pro includes dual graphics (Integrated and ATI or nVidia), then you MUST force the discrete (high-performance) graphics.

This can be done in the Energy Saver system preference by turning OFF automatic graphics switching. Just don't forget to re-enable it later or you'll wonder why your battery life isn't great.

Better yet? Download the free "gfxCardStatus" and switch from your menubar.

2) Only MacBook Pros released in mid-2010 and 2011 support audio out through the Mini DisplayPort. If yours is earlier than this, then you'll have to use a separate cable (TosLink optical or plain old headphone-to-RCA) for audio.

I was pleasantly surprised with the build quality for this price. The cable is fairly sturdy and reinforced, not to mention slightly longer than the Apple VGA adapter, so there is less strain.

Works great from my 21.5" Late 2009 iMac to a Samsung 42" Plasma.

To get the sound to work on your output source...do the obvious of going to your system preferences in your Mac and selecting your audio out as HDMI.

Now here's what some people may be forgetting...It took me a minute to figure this out but on your TV (at least on a Samsung) you have to select the right input AND input name. So, for me I had to select HDMI 1 as my input, AND change the name of that input to the default DVI/PC/etc setting that will work. I am not in front of my TV right now but for me the default input names of DVI, DVI PC, and PC all worked for video, but only one of those, DVI, worked for video AND sound from my iMAC. You will have to experiment. - Hdmi - Audio - Displayport - Mini Displayport'
