Wide Angle Lens
Based off of the two reviews I was unsure how good of a lens attachment I would be receiving, but for $7.99 I threw the dice.
I received this lens attachment a few short days after ordering and it screwed onto the front of my 18 to 55mm (D60) lens without any issue. (the lens attachment is made of metal and glass -- it feels good and sturdy).
After taking several photos I noticed that when set to the widest angle possible the corners vignette and get blurred.
For some this might be a complete turn off, for others it might mean that you just found the best accessory to add to your camera bag for eight bucks. When set to just about any setting other than the widest no vignetting is noticable.
I think it's a perfect new toy for anyone willing to experiment with accessories.
If you want to see what the vignetting looks like here is a link to my official review along with numerous shots that I took with this lens.
[...] Neewer 52mm WIDE-ANGLE Lens ~INCLUDING BAG~ FOR NIKON D40 D50 D60 D70 D80 D40X
One of my photo students brought this wide-angle lens to class and I tried it. I was impressed enough with the few shots I took that I ordered my own lens from Amazon.
I tested mine on a Nikon digital SLR with an 18-55mm zoom lens and on a Canon G5 compact digital camera with a 35mm to 140mm zoom lens (35mm equiv). On the Nikon, this wide-angle lens expanded the wide-angle coverage of the 18mm focal length to something wider than 14mm. On the Canon, this wide-angle lens expanded the wide-angle coverage of the 35mm focal length to slightly wider than 28mm. The macro portion of this lens was similar in performance to my +10 diopter supplemental close-up lens (also called a close-up filter by some).
After additional shots and tests, I can say without reservation--this lens produces decent quality wide-angle images and the macro portion produces decent quality close-up images. Yes, there is some darkening of the corners of the image (vignetting) and there is significant curving of straight lines (barreling) and there is some loss of detail on the edges. However, this lens is a great bargain and I will highly recommend it to future students.
I took the low-price bait and bought one for my new micro four-thirds Panasonic GF1 with 14-45mm kit lens (35mm equivalent of 28-90mm) hoping to get a usable wide angle adapter instead of spending over $1000 on the overpriced 7-14mm Panasonic lens. This adapter is certainly cheap, was delivered fast and seems nicely made for the price. It also has minimal vignetting even when setting the kit lens to 14mm and offers about a 1.5 times wider view. The reason for my one-star rating is that the image quality begins to degrade rapidly starting about half-way from the center in any direction and becomes a mushy blur near the edges. This degradation occurs for all focal lengths, even when zooming the kit lens to 45mm. This might be OK for prints of landscapes or cityscapes up to 3" x 5" or maybe 4" x 6" but will look like crap for anything larger, including any viewing on a monitor. If used to take a group photo the faces of those on the sides of the group will be unrecognizable! I don't see how this can be a useful piece of kit unless the desire is to blur most of image in each of your photos. Essentially, the extra part of the wide-angle image that is added to the photo by using this adaptor has worse image quality than that shot from the cheapest disposable camera.
I received the lens only 6 days after ordering it, and the initial results were great for the price of the lens. I tested it on a Nikon with a 18-55 kit lens and it vignetted the corners like expected but allowed me to capture more of the room with only a small amount of detail loss (which was only noticeable in photoshop when looking at the images @ 100%). Still testing the Macro mode, which seems to let you get extremely close. I think it's well worth the investment of $8.
i got this item with really low expectations because it was only $10, but honestly it is definitely better than i thought it would be. it probably won't produce the same results of an actual wide angle lens (as this is just an attachment to a lens at 52mm thread), but again it's only $10! sturdy metal body and the bag is pretty durable as well, as a college student who has a budget of pretty much $0 it's not a bad addition till i can get a fully functional wide angle lens.
oh and i got this for my nikon d3000 and it's snug like a glove
EDIT 12/9/10: the macro part of the lens works great. i wouldn't recommend going out and doing wildlife pictures with it but still life or plant life would work great. to get the macro just unscrew the base (don't grip it and rip it, be gentle) and it'll come undone
In all actuality I did not expect much from this lens at the price and was pleasently surprised. What I found GREAT about it was that it does not replace my excelent Nikon lenses it is an add on to your camera lens. So you get all of the advantages of your cameras lens plus the added bonus of the wide angle. I used it to take pictures at the US Marine Corps museum in Quantico where you had panaramic views but a limited distance to take the photo. Adding this wide angle attachment was just what the Dr ordered. Pictures came out GREAT. Doesn't take up much room in the camera bag. A BEST BUY! A MUST HAVE.'
