I had some VHS tapes from years ago that I wanted to convert to DVD. Seeing that the source material was VHS tape, I wasn't sure of the quality I'd get. The final DVDs turned out extremely well. Using the 1-hour highest quality setting does an excellent job.
I docked 1-star because the recording process isn't as straight forward as it could be, but as long as you follow the well-written step-by-step instructions, you'll get the hang of it quickly.
DVDs also up-convert nicely on HDTVs, especially Pixar-type animated films. Magnavox ZV427MG9 DVD Recorder & 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR with Line-In Recording. (Refurbished)
I purchased a factory refurb of this machine via Amazon, in order to transfer NTSC home videos of my son. It came in perfect condition, is easy to use, and creates consistently good DVD copies. I would definitely recommend it.
I was replacing a non-working DVD recorder, which probably explains why I didn't even have to read the book to use this remarkably easy machine. It makes clear copies. I love it, and would recommend it to anyone needing a VCR/DVD recorder.
This product may copy dvd to vhs, but only in the most remote circumstances will it record from a vhs to a dvd. It won't copy any vhs videos that you have purchased and won't copy most if not all of your home movies. Only if you specifically recorded your home movies on an unprotected style of vhs will it allow you to make a dvd. All others fail after a few seconds because of magnetic security measures on the actual tape itself. About 95% of all vhs tapes are of this style and will not allow you to use a device like this.
Returned the product after having it out of the box for 15 minutes, paid for the return shipping and they still only refunded 85% of the purchase price even after saying they would offer a full refund.
I was skeptical about buying a used anything(memories from bad experiences). However, the condition was stated as mint. It was exactly that, mint. The only different from new was a very little dust. I been using this machine for a couple months now, and it works perfectly. This my third VCR/DVD combo, and the best one yet and at a great price! I recieved my machine quickly, after I orderd. Everything was as advertised, I'm happy with my purchase.
SUMMARY: works beautifully to transfer VHS tapes to DVD as long as you don't need to do any editing.
I bought this VHS/DVD recorder to transfer old home movies to DVD. It's difficult if not impossible to edit those DVD's on this machine although that functionality is supposed to be included to a limited extent. My machine was missing a key menu item described in the manual. And after attempting an edit, the sound and picture would get out of sync on other DVD players. In order to dub without error I had to dub all the way through a VHS tape without any stops or pauses or edits. Later I would transfer everything to my computer and edit there. Overall I am pleased with the results and pricing. I would purchase this unit again.
Ok, if you're buying a product to convert VHS tapes to DVD disks (like I was), there are much less costly and simpler ways to do it. One of the $10 VHS to digital converters should suffice. I purchased this one for my Dad because he is not computer savvy and I didn't want him to have to use a computer. I thought it would be a simpler (all in one) unit that he could use to get the job done. As it turns out, it is simply a VCR/DVD-player/burner and must be used in the traditional (connected to a TV) way. I had hoped to be able to (without a TV)pop in a VHS tape, press "Play" on the VHS and "Record" on the DVD. Not so. You have to connect it to a TV and go through the on-screen menus to get to the VHS to DVD option. Also, there are no specific instructions for doing the VHS to DVD copy. After searching and re-searching the manual, I finally found a small section that refers to "Dubbing". You'll want to use the dubbing instructions for the VHS to DVD copy capability. Sigh...after all of this, you absolutely CAN convert your VHS tapes to DVD but it's more than most would need. This unit is primarily a VHS/DVD unit (with DVD recorder)that you would use in the conventional way, so, if you need to replace one of those, this would be a great fit. If you want to convert VHS to DVD but don't want to add or replace a VHS unit in your media cabinet, there are other options that would suffice.
I bought this recorder DVD/VCR player for my studio where there is a lot of dust and abrasives to control, so I wasn't expecting a lot. I was wrong. It came in as new condition. It's a great machine and I'm one happy camper. It set up effortlessly and will do way more than I really need it to.
For a unit without a tuner, this one I can recommend. The ownly drawback I have found so far is that the display has only three possibilities in a non HDMI connection (I use S-Video) 4:3 Letterbox / 4:3 Pan & Scan / 16:9 Wide and in my case none fill my 16:9 screen completely. It leaves about 2.5 inches unfilled top & bottom. - Dvd Vhs Recorder - Dvd Vcr Combo - Dvd Recorder - Magnavox Zv457mg9'
