I was looking for a plain ol' black case for my Captivate. Don't care for the plastic snap-on covers or the flashy, colorful covers. Just want something to keep my phone from getting scratched up and provide a bit of protection if I drop it. This case is perfect for anyone looking for the same type of case that I was looking for.
It's your typical silicone phone case. It fits great, the back of it has a diamond-shaped textured pattern with the Otterbox logo and adds some aesthetics to the case. The cut-outs for the mic, headset jack, ear piece, sensors, camera and speaker are perfectly sized. The cut-out for the micro-USB port is slightly larger so those using 3rd party/aftermarket cables shouldn't have much of an issue with the plug not fitting the cut-out. The protrusions for the power and volume control buttons work perfectly. I personally preferred having them versus having cut-outs for the actual buttons as you don't have to push extra hard to activate the button since it isn't flush with the phone case. I won't dock the product any stars for attracting lint; it's a silicone case, they all do that.
The screen protector was pretty firm and installed easily with no air bubbles. You shouldn't have any problems provided you take your time and install it properly. My only (*very minor*) gripe would be the little swatch of a microfiber towel they give you is a bit small so those with bigger hands/fingers may be slightly annoyed when trying to use it to clean the screen prior to applying the protector. Cons:
1) Adds bulk to an already large (although slim-profile) phone. This was not a concern for me but may be for others.
2) It does not fit as tight as I would like but it is not a problem in day-to-day usage. I have never had the case slip off and the phone doesn't move around inside the case or anything. You *can* pry off the edges easily and it isn't hard to remove, but like I said, day-to-day this has not been a problem! I thought of returning it right when I got it for this reason but after two days of usage I wouldn't dream of it.
3) Like other cases of this type it is a bit hard to remove from your pocket as it is rubbery, but again it has not been a problem for me.
Pros:
1) Great feel. I love holding my phone with this case, it feels secure and just plain comfortable in this case. I always felt I would drop the phone before, but now it feels safe in my hand, on my lap, etc. The case texture just generally feels pleasant and non-greasy.
2) Case Buttons. The buttons installed on the case make it feel like you don't even have a case at all. Pressing the unlock/volume buttons is as easy as before, no extra pressure/reaching required.
3) Shock absorption. Despite what other have said I feel like this case offers excellent protection for my phone, both from scratches and drops/bumps. I feel this case would save my phone from a nasty drop although I have not tested it, of course.
4) Screen Protector. Included screen protector is sturdy, cut-to-fit, easy to install, and if you do it right, zero air bubbles. If your looking for a screen protector/case combo, buy this one. I removed mine because I like the feel of the glass and the Captivate has Gorilla Glass so it is technically not needed. (If you baby your phone as I do - Keep only your phone in your pocket, screen facing your thigh! I imagine keys/metal objects would scratch even the toughest of glass over time so use the protector if you keep other things in your pocket.)
5) Looks. The case looks great and has a hatched pattern over the back. It does not make the phone look tacky or otherwise take away from the clean look of the Captivate.
Final Take:
Buy this case! I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a case for the Captivate and I believe it will provide excellent protection for my phone when I inevitably drop/bump it.
I ordered this otterbox because I purchased one for my iphone which was a perfect fit. This one fits entirely too loose for comfort. After 3 days I removed it from my phone, now I'm looking for something else that hopefully fits my phone as well as protect it.
This is not the soft case over hard case that I was familiar with. It is a soft case. It is good qualify, but will not provide the protection that I was expecting from Otterbox. If you just want a soft case to increase your grip and provide some protection, it may work for you, but you might prefer a wider selection of colors and designs. If you want a very safe cover that protects against drops and children, skip this one.
It seems a little big for my Samsung Captivate, but it hasn't slipped off either after a month. Another plus is that it came earlier than I expected. It is a little sticky, so pulling it out of your front pocket can often turn it inside out. However, I think that depends on the cut of the pocket. My problem with it being a little sticky (rubbery) is that it does grab lint, which is not so attractive.
