Pros:
Works great with Media Center in Windows 7. All the shortcut buttons work as expected.
To enter a period ( '.' character) , the '*' button on the remote will work. So it's possible to enter channel 8.3 by pressing 8*3.
With a Gateway SX computer connected to our TV,an antenna and SiliconDust HD Homerun network tuners, we are now able to watch TV over the air in our living room, using Windows Media Center as a DVR. This remote makes the experience complete.
Comes with a manual that is on the most part helpful.
Cons:
Description on Amazon is incorrect. The description says that the remote can control the TV. The manual also says that the remote can learn TV power, Volume, mute and channel number commands from another remote. The instructions refer to a Green LED that indicates success. This remote only has a red LED. There is no green LED on this remote.
This was a disappointment not to be able to control TV volume with this remote.
No company name, address, website or copyright anywhere on the remote itself, on the box or on the manual.
The manual says the colored buttons at the bottom of the remote are for teletext. So they are totally useless. Mediagate - Windows Vista Certified Media Center MCE Remote Control w/ 2 Channel IR Emitter and Infrared Receiver for Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate
This did exactly what it is supposed to - control my media PC. I wasn't careful in my shopping however, and I was expecting this to ALSO be a universal remote for my TV, and it is NOT-- but that's MY fault. Also, it would be nice if the instructions included information about how to program the colored buttons.
this little remotes are my favorite add-on accessory to my HTPCs.
simply plug-n-play. no software installation required. works with windows 7 media center.
remote range is pretty good, up to 15feet no problem.
I purchased 2 of these remotes to use to control our tv that we have running through our PC with Windows Media Center. It has served the purpose well. We have separate speakers hooked up through the computer and it does control the volume that way, but does not control the tv or volume on the tv at all. It does power down the computer into sleep mode, but you do need to use another remote or manually turn on and off your tv. All other features of Windows Media Center can be controlled by this remote including the DVR features and recorded tv which works really well.
The main problem with these remotes is that they both have several buttons that have stopped working over time, to the point that they are not usable anymore. The first after about a year and a half, the second after about 2 years. Honestly I don't think that is too bad for a $28 remote, and since we do have kids I'm sure these remotes have been dropped, thrown, etc. many times. So it's possible that they could work fine for a longer time if they are treated with care.
The description says you can control your TV, and all I wanted to do was be able to turn mine on and off, but it doesn't do that. The manual makes reference to this feature then says "when available". Huh? Guess the joke's on me. it's not available. In place of the TV power button is a non-functioning zoom button.
Also, the button arrangement has 3 circular controls so you're always hitting the wrong circle. Cheap plastic too. - Pc Remote'
