Kindle Covers - kindle 3, ebook

When I wrote this review last August, there was only one Nook, which is now called "Nook First Edition." It continues to be available, but there are two new Nooks. The Nook Color was introduced last fall - it's basically a tablet computer, and runs the Android software that is popular on many smartphones nowadays. It's twice as heavy and costs twice as much as a Kindle, but compared to other tablet computers, it is a very good value.

And now (early June 2011), a new e-ink based Nook is coming out. It's called the "Nook Simple Touch." It is just now starting to ship, so obviously I don't have one and can't tell you anything about it that you can't learn by reading online reviews. But the reviews are very favorable, so if you're considering a Kindle, you should take a look at the new Nook Simple Touch, too.

But the Kindle is nonetheless still a compelling option. It's a mature product, very well designed and easy to use, performance is very zippy, it's competitively priced, and no e-ink based reader has a better, more readable display than the Kindle, not even the new Nook Simple Touch. Also, the Kindle universe is quite extensive: the Kindle store is great and has many thousands of free e-books as well as good deals on most other e-books, and once purchased, you can read your Kindle books on nearly any device you own (computer, phone, tablet), not just your Kindle. And there are tons of great cases and other accessories for the Kindle.

So, while my review compares the Kindle to the older Nook, I'll leave it here because it has a ton of information about the Kindle, a great e-reader that deserves your attention, and because the original Nook continues to be available. That said, I urge you to NOT buy the original Nook. It was a respectable e-reader when it came out in 2009, and still had some value when I wrote about it in August 2010, but it is clearly inferior by today's standards.

------------ my original review --------------

If you're trying to choose between a Nook and a Kindle, perhaps I can help. My wife and I have owned a Nook (the original one), a Kindle 2, and a Kindle DX. When Amazon announced the Kindle 3 this summer, we pre-ordered two Kindle 3's: the wi-fi only model in graphite, and the wi-fi + 3G model in white. They arrived in late August and we have used them very regularly since then. For us, Kindle is better than Nook, but Nook is a good device with its own advantages that I will discuss below. I'll end this review with a few words about the Nook Color.

First, reasons why we prefer the Kindle:

* Speed

In our experience, the Kindle is very zippy compared to the Nook. Page refresh speed (the time it takes a new page to appear after you push the page-turn button) was WAY quicker on Kindle 2 than on Nook, and it's quicker yet on Kindle 3. Yet, I read a whole book on the Nook and didn't find the slower page refresh to be annoying - you get used to it, and it's not a problem.

For me, the more important speed difference concerns navigation - moving the cursor around the screen, for example to pick a book from your library, or to jump to a chapter by selecting it in the table of contents. On Kindle, you do this by pushing a 5-way rocker button, and the cursor moves very quickly. On Nook, you do this by activating the color LCD touchscreen (which normally shuts off when not in use, to conserve battery). A "virtual rocker button" appears on the screen, and you touch it to move the cursor. Unfortunately, the Nook cursor moves very sluggishly. This might not be a big deal to you, but it really got annoying to me, especially since my wife's Kindle was so quick and responsive.

In November 2010, Nook got a software upgrade that increases page refresh speed and makes navigation more responsive. I returned my Nook months ago, so I cannot tell you if the Nook's performance is now equal to the Kindle's, but Nook owners in the comments section have convinced me that the software update improves the experience of using the Nook. If performance is a big factor in your decision, visit a Best Buy and compare Kindle and Nook side by side.

* Screen contrast

You've seen Amazon's claims that the Kindle 3 e-ink has 50% better contrast than Kindle 2 or other e-ink devices. I have no way of precisely measuring the improvement in contrast, but I can tell you that the Kindle 3 display definitely has more contrast than Kindle 2 or Nook. The difference is noticeable, and important: more screen contrast means less eyestrain when reading in poorly lit rooms.

In well-lit rooms, the Nook and Kindle 2 have enough contrast to allow for comfortable reading. But I often read in low-light conditions, like in bed at night, or in a poorly lit room. In these situations, reading on Nook or Kindle 2 was a bit uncomfortable and often gave me a mild headache. When I got the Kindle 3, the extra contrast was immediately noticeable, and made it more comfortable to read under less-than-ideal lighting conditions. (If you go with a Nook, just make sure you have a good reading lamp nearby.)

* Battery life

The Nook's color LCD touch screen drains its battery quickly - I could never get more than 5 days out of a charge. The Kindle 2 had longer battery life than the Nook, and Kindle 3 has even longer life: in the 3 months since we received our Kindle 3's, we typically get 3 weeks of battery life between charges. (We keep wireless off about half the time to save battery power.)

* Weight

Nook weighs about 3 ounces more than the new Kindle, and you can really feel the difference. Without a case, Nook is still light enough to hold in one hand for long reading sessions without fatigue. But in a case, Nook is a heavy sucker. The new Kindle 3 is so light, even in a case, we find it comfortable holding in one hand for long reading sessions.

Reasons some people might prefer the Nook:

* In-store experience

If you need help with your nook, you can take it to any barnes and noble and get a real human to help. You can take your nook into the coffee shop section of your local B&N store and read any book for free for up to one hour per day. When you take your nook to B&N, some in-store special deals and the occasional free book pop up on your screen.

* User-replaceable battery

Rechargeable batteries eventually lose their ability to hold a charge. Nook's battery is user-replaceable and relatively inexpensive. To replace Kindle's battery, Amazon wants you to ship your Kindle to Amazon, and they will ship you back a DIFFERENT Kindle than the one you sent (it's the same model, for example if you send a white Kindle 3, you get a white Kindle 3 back, but you get a "refurbished" one, NOT the exact one you sent them). I don't like this at all.

However, several people have posted comments here that have eased my concerns. Someone looked up statistics on the Kindle's battery and did some simple calculations to show that it should last for 3 or more years. Before that happens, I will surely have upgraded to a newer Kindle model by then. Also, someone found some companies that sell Kindle batteries at reasonable cost and have how-to videos that demonstrate how we can replace the battery ourselves. Doing this would void the Kindle's warranty, but the battery will probably not fail until long after the warranty expires.

[update June 2011: The batteries in the Nook Color and Nook Simple Touch are not replaceable, but the battery in the original Nook is.]

* ePub

Nook uses the ePub format, a widely used open format. Amazon uses a proprietary ebook format. Many libraries will "lend" ebooks in the ePub format, which works with nook but not kindle. However, a free and reputable program called Calibre allows you to translate ebooks from one format to another - it supports many formats, including ePub and Kindle. The only catch is that it doesn't work with copy-protected ebooks, so you can't, for example, buy a Kindle book (which is copy protected) and translate it to ePub so you can read it on a Nook.

* Nook's color LCD touchscreen

The original Nook has a small color LCD screen on the bottom for navigation. This could be a pro or con, depending on your preferences. It makes the Nook hipper and less drab than Kindle. Some people enjoy using the color LCD to view their library or navigate. I did, at first. But after two weeks of use, and comparisons with my wife's Kindle, I found the dedicated buttons of the Kindle easier and far quicker to use than the Nook's color touchscreen. I also found the bright light from the color screen distracting when I was trying to read a book or newspaper (though when not in use, it shuts off after a minute or so to conserve battery).

* expandable capacity

Nook comes with 2GB of internal memory. If you need more capacity, you can insert a microSD card to add up to 16GB more memory. Kindle comes with 4GB of internal memory - twice as much as Nook - but there's no way to expand that. Kindle doesn't accept memory cards of any type. If you mainly use your device to read ebooks and newspapers, this shouldn't be an issue. I have over 100 books on my Kindle, and I've used only a tiny fraction of the memory. Once Kindle's memory fills up, just delete books you don't need immediate access to; you can always restore them later, in seconds, for free.

A few other notes:

Kindle and Nook have other features, such as an MP3 player and a web browser, but I caution you to have low expectations for these features. The MP3 player on the Kindle is like the first-generation iPod shuffle - you can't see what song is playing, and you can't navigate to other songs on your device. I don't like the browser on either device; e-ink is just not a good technology for surfing the web; it's slower and clunkier than LCD screen technology, so even the browser on an Android phone or iPod touch is more enjoyable to use. However, some commenters have more favorable views of either device's browser, and you might, too.

* ebook lending

If you have a Nook or a Kindle, you can "lend" an ebook you purchased to someone else with the same device for up to two weeks. The Nook has always had this feature. The Kindle just got this feature as of December 2010. Most but not all purchased ebooks are lendable, due to publisher restrictions.

* PDF support

Kindle and Nook both handle PDF files, but in different ways. When you put a PDF file on your nook, nook converts it into an ebook-like file, then you can adjust the font size, and the text and pagination will adjust just like with any ebook. But you cannot see the original PDF file in the native format in which it was created. Kindle 3 and Kindle DX have native support for PDF files. You can see PDF files just as they would appear on your computer. You can also convert PDF files to an ebook-like format, and then Kindle handles them just the way the Nook handles them - text and pagination adjust when you change the font size. Unfortunately, some symbols, equations, and graphics get lost or mangled in the translation - even when viewing PDF files in their native format on the Kindle. Moreover, the small screen size of the Kindle 3 and the Nook is not great for PDF files, most of which are designed for a larger page size. You can zoom and pan, but this is cumbersome and tiresome. Thanks to commenters who suggested viewing PDF files in landscape mode on the Kindle (I don't know if you can do this on Nook); this way, you can see the entire top half of the page without panning, and then scroll down to the bottom half. This works a little better.

SUMMARY:

Nook and Kindle each offer their own advantages. We like the nook's user-replaceable battery, compatibility with ePub format, and in-store experience. But we strongly prefer Kindle 3 because its performance is zippier, its higher-contrast screen is easier to read, and it's smaller and lighter so it is more portable and more comfortable to hold in one hand for long reading sessions.

* Nook Color

Everything I wrote about the Nook in this review applies to the original Nook (which continues to be available), not the new Nook Color. To me, the Nook Color is in a different product category than the Kindle or original Nook. Nook Color has an LCD screen, like an iPad or most computer monitors. That's a big disadvantage for people like me, who get headaches from reading a computer screen for long periods of time. Amazon's Kindle product page has an informative section on e-ink vs. LCD displays.

But many people don't have problems reading from computer screens, and the Nook Color is getting glowing reviews in the press and by owners. For the money, it offers a lot of functionality such as a good web browser and the ability to play games and watch movies. But keep in mind: it costs a lot more than the Kindle, it weighs nearly twice as much, it doesn't come in a 3G version, and (unlike the original Nook) the Nook Color doesn't have a user replaceable battery. Portable Dvd Players - portable dvd player, dual dvd player

We purchased this product for our kids to watch movies on our drive from Louisville to Phoenix. For the first four days of the trip, the DVD player worked great and kept the kids very entertained. Then, the evening of the fourth night of the trip, the screen would not display a picture on the secondary display. About 30 minutes later, the screen stopped showing video on the primary display. They could hear the movies but not see them. The video never returned to either screen, so we returned the DVD player for a refund. Perhaps we got a lemon, but based on our experience, I could not recommend someone purchase this product. The product quality was very low without any longevity. Axion AXN-7979 7-Inch Dual Screen Portable DVD Player, Black

I have owned this portable dvd for about 2 months so I can not speak of the longetivity of the product but My kids love it. The straps are very easy to attach to the back of the headrest, they love the remote, the sound is good, picture quality is good also and very easy to operate. I do not think this comes with a built in battery . I have owned several dual portable dvd players but this is among the best. I would recommend this product.

This is a very early review since I got got the DVD player today, but so far so good! The screen size is great, the volume goes really loud, it is easy to attach them to the head rests, and they seem to be of good quality. I would recommend these especially because they come with a remote, which was important to me since my kids are young and don't know how to work the buttons very well.

I was hesitant to buy this product because it is not a brand that is well known for quality. But I couldn't beat the price, and with Amazon's awesome customer service, I knew if there was a major problem I would be well taken care of.

It was super easy to install and use. We went on a 2 thousand mile road trip and it functioned at all times with no problems or glitches.

The only thing I didn't like was that it comes with a tiny remote that does not have batteries included, and the battery you need is some random kind that I didn't have the patience or time to go look for at a store. So we did without, which is fine, but it's harder to navigate through the previews and menu without it.

Overall I was pleased with the purchase, but we've only had it a month and on one road trip, so I can't speak for it's longevity, but as it is right now I enjoy the product and would buy it again.

I bought this DVD player after considering the price of installation of one in my car. In a previous car I did an installation and the sound never worked right and permanately did damage to some of my electrical components in the car, these afterall were a cinch to install and my car rides have never been more pleasant. The price was amazing and the same as a lot of single screen models. I would highly recommend this DVD player for anyone with more than 1 child who wants a no fuss car ride everytime. The quality is impeccable and it is so easy to operate. What a find!!!

I searched for awhile for a DVD player and this is the one I finally bought. I love the dual screens and have not had any problems with it. We've owned it for approx 2 months now and used it off and on. Installation was super easy. I can now see why so many people wanted to have the auto resume feature otherwise I would have given 5 stars for ease of use. The quality seems a little cheaper but hey for the price I'm really not complaining. Video quality is fine for us, kids don't care as long as they can see the picture. Overall I am extremely happy with the product and would highly suggest it!

My Kids loved it and kept them entertained they even listen to there Cd's in it when they were done with movies on our long road trip. It even stayed on when we stopped to get gas and had to turn off the car. Only problem we had was that it was stolen after only 2 weeks:( - Dual Dvd Player - Portable Dvd Player - Dual Screens - Dual Screen Car Dvd Player'

Combination Co2 Smoke - brk brands, smoke alarm

Our house was wired for smoke detectors -- specifically the rather cheesy BRK 4120SB, which delights in false "low power" chirping. My goal was to replace the ones in the bedrooms with combination alarms that would alert us not only to smoke but to the presence of carbon monoxide. (Not to scare you but harm and even death from carbon monoxide poisoning are definite risks, especially in a home with deep-sleeping teenagers.)

I needed units that would be compatible with the wiring of our current system, and ideally ones that would accept the power leads, as wired. After some research here and elsewhere, I called the BRK help line and got definite information about the unit that would be compatible, as well as locations within the home where I both should and should not install units.

I ordered two units to start with, still being a bit leery of my previous experience, and can say that installation took less than 5 minutes per device.

1. Follow the instructions for removing the plastic tab in the battery door of your new unit and pushing the button to test your new unit. If all's well, proceed. Disregard the "locking pin" stuff unless you are in a shared dwelling and are concerned with someone walking off with your 9-volt battery. (This was the weirdest part of the instructions, frankly, and this is my guess on why it's there.) **Important: you are listening for 3 tones, pause, 3 tones, pause, 4 tones, pause, 4 tones. There is a typo at the bottom of page 3 of the instructions, so I've just verified with BRK that the tone pattern I'm mentioning is the correct one.

2. Twist off and unplug your current unit.

3. Back the two screws holding your collar to the ceiling so you have enough clearance to remove the collar.

4. Install the new collar.

5. Install your new unit. (A wired plug is included in case you need to swap your existing plug for the new plug.)

Fellow owners of the 4120SB will find that the upgraded unit sets and locks into place in the ceiling *much* easier and more reliably. Ditto with the battery door. Note that on the SC9120B, if you're having problems with the battery door not shutting (a) there is a little trigger tab that you should be able to push down with a fingernail and/or (b) hold the unit upside-down.

***A word, please, about longevity, since the primary purpose of an alarm is your safety.

1. Replace your batteries at least once a year.

2. Combo smoke/carbon monoxide units have a 5-year life span, per BRK staff. Regular smoke alarms have a 10-year lifespan. Not replacing them within these timespans is, in my opinion, the most dangerous kind of false economizing. (Note also that if you need help, the BRK customer service apparently has improved greatly since the experience of earlier reviewers of the product line. The call I made in June could not have been more thorough and professional, even to dealing with the phantom beeps of my 5-year-old alarms.)

3. Whether or not you buy this or any smoke alarm product, please do yourself and your family two favors. First, label the plug (hidden) side of your units with the install and replace dates. Second, change your batteries at least once a year.

BTW, I gave the unit a 4 rather than a 5 because while the battery door and twist-on/twist-off issues are less irritating than on the earlier generation, they still do exist. First Alert SC9120B Hardwire Combination Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Battery Backup

Received three BRK SC9120B replacements after original units (4 years old) started a low battery chirp with new Duracell batteries. Spoke with BRK rep. about problem and they sent three new units with Duracell batteries. The units worked fine for about two weeks before all three started to chirp a low battery signal. In that time our other three BRK smoke only detectors that were installed 4 years ago started the same chirping sound. Again called BRK and they were going to send us three replacements for them. After the nightmare of having six four year old BRK products fail in a matter of three weeks and three brand new replacement units fail in two weeks. I would stay away from BRK! I have read elsewhere about an issue with BRK and Duracell so I was a bit surprised when the new units arrived with Duracell batteries in them.

I have a rental property and this year, the city's new regulation required installation of these detectors. One of the detectors malfunctioned and the terrified tenant called 911, who proceeded to do over 1000 dollars in property damage.

I subsequently found out that even the EPA has admitted that many of the CO detectors they tested were unreliable, and either went off at too low of a level or did not sound at dangerously high levels.

According to their website, the best way to keep the building's inhabitants safe is to have fuel-burning appliances properly installed and maintained by licensed professionals to make sure that the gases (including CO) are vented properly.

I ended up doing a lot of research related to CO as a result. I have the documentation from the Fire Department indicating the levels that they measured (WAY BELOW the low threshold on the detector) even near the detector.

I knew that a problem was unlikely since the heat wasn't even ON at the time.

Nevertheless, they broke into two apartments, destroying irreplaceable historic doors and frames. Even the fire chief told me that if I have a hard-wired smoke detector/CO detector combo, I should get it replaced as they have had false alarms with that type of detector. But as mentioned on the EPA website, and evidenced by many other reviews on Amazon etc, CO detection is apparently in it's infancy and I'm surprised that these detectors are even being sold, much less required by law.

Unfortunately, according to my lawyer, it's more trouble than it's worth to sue the city, so I had to suck up the CONSIDERABLE expenses myself. Not to mention my poor tenant, who was (unharmed of course) but anxious.

I am so ANGRY, but the only thing I can do apparently is to WARN other people about these alarms. If you have one in your house and there's a false alarm, that's one thing. But if a tenant has a false alarm, you are vulnerable in many different ways.

The WORST thing about this type of alarm is that if the CO part malfunctions, you've lost your smoke alarm as well. In addition, since it's installed high on the ceiling, if it false alarms, you have to get on a ladder to turn the thing off.

I would not recommend the first alert smoke/CO alarm to ANYONE. - Smoke Alarm - Brk Brands - Carbon Monoxide - First Alert'

Racism - racism

Colin Gordon has put together an excellent reference for those interested in the economic history of St. Louis over the last 80 years, but with lessons that could easily apply to any other central city in the United States. We've all seen anecdotal evidence of these problems in run-down inner city neighborhoods, empty buildings in inner suburbs, and gleaming new parking lots in the outer suburbs, but Gordon uses data to back up these assumptions.

The book is roughly 1/2 maps and 1/2 text - and strikes the right balance at that. The maps serve to illustrate visually the scope and scale of "white flight," poor planning decisions, and the lunacy of a fractured metro government. While the city atrophies, suburbs further and further away compete for the same employers, the same stores, and the same residents.

While Gordon shies from making many overall conclusions based on the data and focuses more on presenting the history of what happened - this book provides a model blueprint for civic, business, and academic leaders to understand what to avoid in promoting "growth." Mapping Decline: St. Louis and the Fate of the American City (Politics and Culture in Modern America)

This book, though well-written and quite interesting, is as difficult and disturbing to read as your best friend's obituary, if, like me, you grew up in Saint Louis during the '40's and '50's, that city's last two decades of greatness - "First in booze, first in shoes, last in the American League" - before its decline into its current level of inconsequentiality. The population loss has been so great that, the last time that I was in my old neighborhood, the few houses still standing on my old block, though long-abandoned, still had the glass in their windows. The neighborhood is so deserted and empty that it lacks even vandals. I was surprised that I could see the Arch from in front of my former house. Then it struck me: there was not a single tree left standing anywhere, where once there was a virtual forest of London plane trees, spaced so tightly that nearly every house was shaded by its own tree.

The book tells how now-clearly-stupid decisions, some made back in the 19th C., almost inevitably led to to the death of the modern city. The decision to stick with the steamboat and block easy access to the city by railroads, the decision to make the city into a political entity separate from St. Louis County, yet forcing it to maintain the usual political entities needed by a county, but of no consequence to a city, e.g. there is a Sheriff of St. Louis County and a Sheriff of the City of Saint Louis, in addition to the expected Chief of Police usual in cities.

The book is centered around the history of a single house, located in my former neighborhood and once occupied by a family with whom I was personally acquainted.

Anyone interested in the history of a city and the social, political, and real-estate manipulations that brought it to its metaphorical knees and then killed it will find this book unputdownable.

Mapping Decline does that and much more, following and explaining how St. Louis fell from the fourth largest U.S. city in 1910 to the 48th largest in 2000 and how the population fell from a high of over 800,000 in the 1940s to about 350,000 in 2000. Gordon's history rings true. His tale of racism, lack of leadership, suburban distrust of the city, political fragmentation, and mis-use of federal and state policies led policy makers across metroploitan St. Louis to ignore deteriorating residential neighborhoods to chase after high income residents and commercial development, assist developers rather than residents, and become more concerned with capturing taxes and jobs from neighboring municipalities than the good of the metropolitan area or its less-than-upper-middle class residents.

I am a native of St. Louis and an urban economist. I knew much of what Gordon writes, but it was great to have it all in one place and nicely tied together. Except for the chapter on the ever-evolving post-WWII urban renewal programs, the book reads easily, though the message is painful. His maps are useful, though those not familar with St. Louis geography will probably want to have a road atlas or GIS website handy. The message is important to anyone interested in the modern American city.

but oh, so depressing. I grew up in St. Louis and moved to nearby Illinois 40 years ago, still working downtown and I've seen it all. The author put in graphic/data terms everything I've seen, especially the racism fed by real estate and development interests and exacerbated by a vacuum of political leadership. I'll admit, too, that I didn't finish it and grabbed at the opportunity to pass it on to a colleague whose library version was overdue, believing that she could use the information (she's a data-driven planner). Maybe someday I'll borrow it back when she tells me there's hope at the end of the book...I was afraid to finish it for fear there isn't.

As someone who has pursued a career in urban public policy, and a native St. Louisan, this book is almost physically painful to read. I have read widely about the reasons for the decline of older American cities in general and St. Louis in particular, but nothing prepared me for the powerful impact that Professor Gordon's research, and his graphic depictions of his findings, would have. The fact that St. Louis went from a population of 800,000 people in 1950 to 350,000 in 2000 is bad enough. The fact that 'white flight' to the St. Louis suburbs occurred in part to avoid racial integration is common knowledge. But to see the GIS maps showing the extent and pace of these changes is just devastating.

While Professor Gordon argues that St. Louis is not unique among American cities, I find it hard to believe that other Northern cities experienced such overt racism, prolonged for so long a period of time. I cannot help but wonder whether this degree of racism, which seemed to pervade all levels of the public and private sectors into the 1970s, and distorted the city's federally funded programs intended to ease its problems, is a significant factor in the city's precipitous decline. - Racism'

Wine Fridge - wine fridge, beverage center

This is a beautiful bev fridge that looks sleek and modern in our new wetbar. The blue light definitely has the "wow" factor and it does not warm the fridge like a traditional bulb can. The temperature is holding true at 39 degrees (which is the lowest setting since it is really the wine fridge with different shelves). It does exactly as promised and looks amazing doing it. Danby Beverage Center (Black) (23.88"H x 23.75"W x 34.38"D)

This fridge looks great, and it is the right size for under the counter in our kitchen, we bought it to keep all the drinks out of the big fridge.... but man! It drives us crazy constantly turning on and off, literally 10 times a minute. We have tried turning the temp up and keeping it full, but to no avail. It is really noticeable and bothersome in the quiet moments of the morning and evening...just when you want to relax and enjoy your kitchen. It's almost like it's breathing and straining. We are bummed about it.

Three Evaporators replaced in 2.5 years. Total Junk. Four months prior to the manufacturer warranty expired and it failed. Evaporator replaced. Six months later under a service contract, it failed again. One week after receiving it back, failed again. I'm convinced that the service companies are milking the service contract for low hanging fruit on this product, but aren't actually finding the real leak. Danby all but said, sorry about your luck and were no help. I don't recommend this product or any purchase of a Danby product as a result. This thing has been a total lemon. It's currently unplugged and awaiting yet another repair under the service contract. I plan to replace it with another name brand product.

Bought this beverage cooler to put into a home theatre room we built in basement. I love the blue light, it gives off a nice color and a little light without overpowering, this is great when all the lights are out and we are watching a movie. The glass shelves are great! I know there are other options out there that are cheaper...some MUCH cheaper, but the adjustable glass shelves are worth it. Now I do not have to worry about things tipping. Another part of other reviews with wire shelves seemed to be that they would start to bend if you put too much on them.

I've had this beverage center for about 2 months now, and it looks great, but my major issue with this unit is the fan runs for about 20 seconds, stops for 10 seconds, and then on again, and it will continue to cycle like that, no matter how cold it is set at. It is incredibly annoying. I'm not sure if it's just my particular unit, I will be calling into Danby to see what they say about this.

This fridge is exactly what I wanted in a beverage center for our wet bar. It cools to 39 degrees, which most of these type of fridges will not get this cold. It is quiet running and the blue light is definitely cool. Also has a lock which is nice.

Came on time, and in great condition, as expected. Very easy to unpack, insert in existing under counter location, and to level. Holds temp at 40. Attractive. Shelf levels are all pre-set, so you don't have complete flexibility.

In the 3 1/2 years I owned this cooler it failed two times. Once, in the first year and a half it needed a compressor replaced and this was done under warranty. At the 3 1/2 year mark, it did it again and this time I got a pro rata payment which ended up being 1/3 of the cost of a new beverage center. Two total failures in this short of time is not impressive and I am left with a small amount of money in which to buy a new unit. Customer Service is not helpful ignoring my request to reconsider their "settlement" based on their warranty. I don't recommend buying this beverage center for the reasons stated as well as the fact that it never cooled very well and runs a circulating motor every 10 seconds. Not a good choice!

So far I am loving the new beverage center although the room is not quite complete and have not used the frig for anything yet, it is plugged in and looks great. The lock was not quite as great of quality as the rest of the frig, only 3 stars on that. - Wine Fridge - Danby - Mini Fridge - Beverage Center'

Macbook Memory - 8gb, macbook memory

I have been running with this RAM in my MacBook Pro 17 (Summer 2009) for over 6 weeks. Not one lockup/freeze or problem of any kind. Programs are faster in general and I don't worry about closing applications any more. Apple computers through the years have been extremely finicky about RAM quality. I can't recommend these SO-DIMM's high enough. I put my old factory 2GB sticks for the MacBook Pro 17 into my wife's new MacBook 13. That worked perfectly..

These two 4GB SO-DIMM sticks cost $1200 from Apple directly. Spoil yourself and don't feel guilty about buying them here for much less -- especially if you use Parallels Desktop, or VMWare. Kingston will back you up, Amazon will also. Kingston Apple 8GB Kit (2x4GB Modules) 1066MHz DDR3 SODIMM iMac and Macbook Memory (KTA-MB1066K2/8G)

I purchased a 2010 model mac mini with only 2GB memory knowing that eventually I would upgrade the memory. After about 6 months, I found the computer lagging when using iphoto, photoshop and powerpoint at the same time (which I do often). I looked into the memory upgrade. Apple wanted $600 for 8GB memory but I found these Kingstons for under $100 on Amazon. They arrived within a day, installed within 5 minutes and when I booted up my mac it immediately recognized the memory and had improved productivity. I now can work with all of my memory eating applications open without problem, and I've noticed great improvement in web surfing and just general use of the computer. I am VERY pleased!

I bought this RAM as an upgrade to my MacBook Pro. The RAM seemed good for a few days, but I soon discovered it was the source of my Mac's Kernel Panics that started shortly after installing the RAM. It seemed to be associated with filling a certain area of the RAM, because my machine would work fine, until I had a lot of memory-intensive programs running. Often the problem would happen when putting the MacBook to sleep. At last, the RAM just totally died -- I got the 3 longs beeps of death when I turned my Mac on. What a sinking feeling that is! I put the original RAM back and, fortunately my Mac seemed okay. I returned the RAM to Amazon for a replacement. Amazon was wonderful -- they even sent me the replacement RAM before I had returned the product to them. The new RAM also seemed to be fine for a few days, maybe almost a week. Then I started getting Kernel Panics again. At that point, I decided I would just live with 4G of RAM and forget trying to upgrade to 8G. Amazon was wonderful again about returning the product, this time for a full refund. I questioned myself, that maybe I installed the RAM wrong. But then I answer myself that every time I put the original RAM back everything is fine. So I'm pretty sure that either: out of each batch of 2 RAM chips, at least one was bad each time, or, the Mac OSX Snow Leopard does not handle 8G RAM. Whatever the case, I am sure that I install the Kingston RAM, I get Kernel Panics, I put the original RAM back and the Kernel Panics go away.

You may be suspicious about my report and I don't blame you. I am surprised at this behavior myself since I have been installing my own RAM in PCs for 2 decades and I cannot think of a single instance where the new RAM was bad; until this experience, that is.

I have a brand new Macbook Pro 13" with the 2.4ghz processor. I am running the Kingston 8GB kit with a G. Skill 120GB SSD, the computer screams and could only imagine if I opted for the 15" with the i7 but the way I have it now my 13" is too fast for what I need anyways. The ram got a 4 for ease of use because I had to reset my PRAM upon installation. The computer was slow at first, booted into the diagnostic tools, memory passed all diagnostic checks so just went wil simple troubleshooting steps by resetting the PRAM/NVRAM and the SMC for good measure. Computer booted up in less than 8 seconds and runs Logic Studio, Apurture Pro (while rendering) and designing scripts all at the same time with little to no lag.

If you have a bad set of RAM don't rate it a 0 unless you run a memory diagnostic, reset PRAM, and have confirmation that it is the ram. People switch back to their original apple ram and it runs fine because yeah, snow leopard pre-caches information. If you reset that pre-cache I beet most of these guys wouldn't need a new set of ram.

RESET PRAM (hold option + command + R + P and press the power button, let it go to the white screen and restart and et go of all the keys). Also go to apple.com/support not some cheesy Mac forum I troll those forums and people are idiots on most of them.

I received the RAM ahead of expected time in good shape and at a great price. I've been using this memory for over two months and it works flawlessly. I would not hesitate to recommend this RAM to those seeking to maximize their memory on MacBook Pros.

Although the specs claim that you can upgrade only up to 4 GB ( 2 GB in each slot), this 8 GB RAM works great in my MacBook ( not just the PRO version- this is the regular Whilte polycarb Unibody version). Makes a distinct difference vs. the 2 GB standard that came with my MacBook. I had found several references to its compatibility with a MacBook Pro, however no one had verified this to work with just a MacBook. The specs for a 13' Macbook pro and Macbook were almost the same except for the aluminium unibody vs the polycarbonate, and this worked with the MacBook without any problems.

Installing the 8 GB RAM was a 10 minute task. It took some time to dig up the right precision screwdriver bit. First shutdown the Macbook then remove the 8 screws to expose the RAM. Discharge static electricity and then remove the existing RAM ( follow instructions given in the 'Everything MAC' manual if needed) . Plug in the new RAM and fix back the screws. Boot back up..Go to MAC>About this Mac, to see the 8 GB in action,..

The Macbook is much faster now. All apps , from Google Chrome to XCode run quite smoothly. - Apple - Macbook Memory - 8gb - Ddr3 1066'

Light shows up orange against my very pale skin, and looks cakey and dry even when I moisturize and only apply a little. Not good coverage on red spots and pimples, even when you layer it on, you can still see the red through the orange.

Psychological Thriller - penelope cruz, movie

As you can see from the customer reviews bouncing between loving and hating this movie, it is not for everyone.

The first time I saw this movie in the theater I was unable to move when it was over. I was utterly stunned. I can count on one hand the times this has happened to me over a lifetime of movie viewing.

Tom Cruise plays David Aames, a rich young man who has inherited a publishing empire from his late father. Cameron Diaz is the girlfriend he really doesn't care about, and Jason Lee plays his best (and perhaps only) friend. Aames is utterly disconnected from his own life, and seems to care little about anything. One night his friend (Lee) brings an intriguing dancer (Penelope Cruz) to his birthday party. Cruise takes up with Cruz, but then experiences a waking nightmare that destroys his life. I can't reveal more of the plot without giving it away, and I suggest you NOT read any more reviews of this film and just see it--otherwise you'll deprive yourself of one incredible movie ride.

This movie is visually spectacular. There are scenes that set off the dive klaxon deep within my brain but I couldn't figure out why until much later in the film when the plot is revealed. What is this film? Science fiction? Yes, but... A psychological thriller? Yes, but... A love story? Yes, ultimately.

It's better not to categorize Vanilla Sky, and just enjoy (or not enjoy) it. I think this movie either works on you, or it doesn't. And this is probably the most polarizing movie I have ever seen. You'll either love it or hate it.

Jason Lee and Cameron Diaz give the performances of their careers. I would have said the same of Cruise, but then he uncorked Collateral. Kurt Russell has a relatively small part as Cruise's psychologist, but he nails it perfectly.

Vanilla Sky is based on Spanish filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar's Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes). I liked Vanilla Sky a lot more than Abre Los Ojos, unlike most American remakes of foreign films, because it contains additional scenes and more spectacular visuals. However, an English-only speaker like me can't really make a fair comparision because there are so many subtitles to watch in Abre Los Ojos it makes it hard to watch the actors. Penelope Cruz plays the same role in both films.

The real value of this film is that it makes you think about what (and more importantly, who) is at the core of your own life, and how will you feel about how you have lived when the clock runs out?

Vanilla Sky is a rare movie--unique in plot, and made with passion and care. I can't guarantee you'll like it, but there is no other movie more worth taking a chance on. Vanilla Sky

hmm...I wonder what makes all these people say that Vanilla Sky was a horrible movie? Perhaps it's the fact that they did not or could not understand the film. I own Vanilla Sky and Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) and i must say that Vanilla Sky lived up to, and went beyond all expectations. If you've seen Abre, then I would highly recommend seeing Vanilla Sky. The acting in Abre was great, but the cinematography of Vanilla was even better. Intriguing film that will have you scratching your head until the very end. A definite MUST SEE!

This is not coming from a random person without knowledge of the movie industry. I am a huge movie fan. I see nearly 50 movies a year in theaters, most likely more. I own nearly 1000 DVDs. With all of these movies I've seen and own, Vanilla Sky is my favorite. It contains anything any moviegoer would want-suspense, romance, action, comedy, and science fiction. Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz have excellent chemistry. The story rapidly changes from a love story to a science fiction drama. It confuses and entertains the viewer. It make syou think and that is always admirable. Overall, I LOVE IT!

This movie is one of the most brilliant movie's ever made. When I first viewed this movie I was in Gr 11 highschool and going down the wrong path in life. This movie hammered in the moral of the story harder than any story I have ever heard. It colourfully illustrates the fact that people make choices in life that have consequences. In this case, mr cruise gets in the car with cameron's character. This choice caused him great consequences. I really related to this movie and it hit me so hard that I cried myself to sleep that night after watching it. But it was so great, it felt as though I had an epiphony. Cheesy as that may sound, its like a door in my mind had just been blown open and I knew exactly how I wanted to live my life. How I treated people, the choices I would make...it all made sense. And for that, this is my favorite movie of all time. It saved me.

This is a great movie. I don't see how people could not like this movie and all of the questions it leads you to ponder about the nature of reality and life and death and love and treating people with respect instead of this using them for your own ends. And Cameron Crowe brings just enough spaciness to the film to make you feel like the Tom Cruise character and feel like you're lost in his dream life that's slowly starting to turn into a nightmare. It is a great movie that will entertain you and make you think. I've seen this and the original, and as good as the original is I have to say that this is a superior movie as far as my tastes go. The original is more of a thriller in tone despite just about the same plot and dialogue, while Vanilla Sky wants to move beyond the original's stab at philosopy and really make you think about the nature of reality. And to top it off is Crowe's ususal brilliant use of music throughout the film that really helps to nail scenes and give them much more of an impact.

I have watched Vanilla Sky three times now, and every time it has left me powerfully affected. It deals with many topics that interest me, particularly the study of dreams vs. reality, and the nature of relationships, and love. There is much that is very good about it, however it contains one major flaw that prevents it from being truly great. The acting, is overall top notch. Jason Lee turns in yet again another stellar supporting role; he radiates charisma in this performance, and fits the role given perfectly. Cameron Diaz is a fine choice for Julianna, she brings an almost maniacal sense of urgency to her character that was both disturbing and complusively watchable; she simply looks amazing on film. Tom Cruise performs more than adaquetly as well, and perhaps the greatest kudos must be given to Penelope Cruz, who simply lights up the screen here. Her charisma is unmistakable, and she infuses this film with life and vibrancy. This is a film with many powerful images, be it the gorgeous vanilla skies that soar over New York within the dream, or the (SPOILER) unforgettable image of Cruise's David Aames waving farewell to his disfigured reflection in the mirror. It entices in the first viewing, draws you in irresistably, and apon further viewings still moves with great pacing, and many subtle clues and hints can be found that help the viewer understand the nature of David Aame's reality. My only real complaint is that Cameron Crowe for some inexplicable reason (though it certainly must have been because of confused test audiencies, those who this film is not intended for anyway) chose to come out at the end of the film and blatantly reveal all of the films secrets and twists; he talks to the viewer as if we were 5 years old and need him to hold our hand. This film could have been very similar in nature to, and even rivaled Lynch's masterpiece Mulholland Drive had Crowe not chosen to do so, and it is very disappointing that he did in fact choose to do so. But this aside, the film is very compelling and often powerful. I still love the questions it raises concerning love (if his love with Sofia wasnt "real", than does it still have meaning?), and the image of "I will find you in another life, when we are both cats" that so powerfully emphasizes the power that love can have, and the joy and awe surrounding that human emotion. For a similar image look in the closing chapters of the novel The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman. But i digress. This film is solid, even coming from hollywood, and with big name stars attached. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who is willing to be challenged slightly by the film they watch, and those who love to be moved.Highly Recommended - Thriller - Movie - Science Fiction - Penelope Cruz'

Tutu

I purchased the pink and purple color variety for my (nearly three year old) daughter for Halloween dress up. Because she is approaching the dress up for pretend play stage I wanted something that she could wear after Halloween for pretend, and that she could put on and off easily herself. I thought that she would enjoy imagining herself as a ballerina because she likes to bounce through the house calling ballet moves that she learned on TV and DVD's. I looked at many different Tutu's on Amazon Marketplace. This one seemed to be a good balance between cost and quality. Although (obviously) much more expensive than the little bits of net material on elastic bands that they sell in dollar stores, it looked as good, at least in the pictures, as much more expensive Tutu's. It also had the look that I liked, falling into a skirt but also very full and ruffled.

After I ordered it, my daughter, with typical two year old opposition, decided that she wanted to be a ghost. Having waited until middle age to have a daughter, I hoped that she would change her mind when she saw the beautiful skirt. I want to parade my beautiful daughter up and down the street looking gorgeous, not throw a sheet over her head!!!

I prepared myself for a let-down, like last year's LCD dress that lit up for an hour a month before Halloween and would not be fixed no matter what I did. However, the skirt is every bit as lovely as in the picture. It is very full and bounces and flounces as my daughter hops around (shouting "Arabesque! Brisé!")What cannot be seen in the picture is that the material is also kind of shimmery and iridescent. The material is soft and comfortable, not stiff. A child shouldn't have any trouble wearing it for several hours, sitting in it, etc. The softness of it also contributes to how well it moves with the child. It is sized well. I have seen cheap dress up tutus that say "6x" but don't even fit my size 3-4 daughter. This is large enough for inexperienced hands to slip on easily and should fit her for a couple years. The colors in the pink and purple style blend into each other really nicely, due to purple layers falling over pink between the all purple top and all pink lowest layers. It is satin around the waistband and embellished with a pretty satin ribbon.

Best of all, my daughter has agreed to save the white sheet over her head for scaring Mommy and visitors at home. Little Adventures Dress-up & Dance Tutu for Girls, Lilac/Pink

Fits my 3 1/2 year old perfectly. Colors are electric pink and orange. Length is perfect - nice and short so it does not get in the way of dancing. Did not make my daughter itch after hours of wearing it. Haven't had to wash it yet, so I don't know how it will hold up to washing, but I expect that in a garment bag it will be fine.

This is as cute as it looks in the picture. It is unhemmed - maybe these tutus always are. Hope it isn't a problem. Very soft as advertised and not scratchy. Haven't washed it yet so can't say how it will hold up.

I was sooo pleased when this arrived and it truly is stunning for the comparative prices of other tutus out there. Very fluffy, full, and flouncy!It is just perfect for pictures. My daughter insists on wearing a tutu everyday, everywhere and I will probably be buying another in a different color now.'

Scarf - scarves, pashmina

If you are as confused as I was about which 'pashmina' shawl/stole to order, look no further. This one is beautiful. It has a lustrous sheen, good drape, fringe that moves like you want it to, and is amazingly soft. I bought it for my beach wedding, and know I'll enjoy wearing it for many years to come. It's a bit more expensive than some of the other suspiciously cheap wraps out there, but is well worth the money. It looks like silk, and the feel is even softer. Great product, would recommend to a friend, and am considering buying another in a different color. I got mine from Saka's, and have no complaints about the seller. 78" x 28" Eco-Friendly Bamboo Rayon Soft Solid Pashmina Shawl / Wrap / Stole - Silver Grey

I ordered this for our wedding-vow renewal, as I don't trust the weather (or the air conditioning at the church) quite enough to bare my shoulders in mid-November here.

I debated between several shawls, some of which were significantly cheaper than this one. I'm SO glad I ordered this one, though. The bamboo rayon is SO elegant and silky-soft! I've been meaning to knit myself a shawl from bamboo-rayon yarn, and after experiencing this shawl, that might just be my next knitting project. It is beautiful and will go with my dress exquisitely. It drapes beautifully, is comfortable, and even as a larger woman, this fits me more than adequately.

I do wish it had care instructions; initially, I will hand-wash it and hang it to dry, so as not to cause undue shrinkage.

You will not regret purchasing this shawl. I am absolutely delighted.

I ordered this shawl as an accent for a wedding, and it IS incredibly soft. The only negative is that, when I pulled it out of the packaging, there was mud on it. I don't believe it said anywhere that these shawls were pre-owned. My mother thinks they must be made in Sri Lanka or something. - Scarves - Shawl - Pashmina Wrap - Pashmina'

Blackberry Bold Charger - blackberry bold charger, cell phone charger

I purchased one of these Rapid car charger hoping for the best, see the price is so incredibly low that I was sceptical. But I'm happy to say that I am 110% satisfied and actually ordered a second one, works great at a great price. Would recommend to any blackberry Curve 8530 owner. blackberry car charger for storm 9500 9530 bold 9700

This seems two cheap to work--under $3 including shipping! I use it with a Blackberry Bold 9700 Shipping was fast and I just used it for three days while traveling and it worked flawlessly. What else is there to say?

A rating of a 5 would be all the bells and whistles which this doesn't have. It does have a red led that lets you know that it is properly inserted into the cigarette lighter. Not all chargers have this feature. This red led turning green or blue when the phone is fully charged would have been the bells and whistles which again all chargers don't have also. But the price is good and it does charge my blackberry bold 9700. I gave it a 4.

I bought one of these for my wife's and I Bold 9700's. In my car,you have to angle the charger just right for it to work. Very frustrating especially when you're driving and you have to keep twisting and pulling the charger out for it to work.

In my wife's car, it works flawlessly. I would give this more stars if I thought it was a problem with my cars outlet, but I plug our GPS into it and that works fine. All in all, the charger is as cheap as a button and works well enough in my wife's car to warrant 3 stars.

I bought 2 items from this seller, the items were exactly as described! The seller is absolutely dependable and courteous! You just don't get to experience such EXCELLENT customer service like this now and days! I will def. buy from this seller in the future! The seller is very prompt and punctual! I give the product 5 stars and the seller 6 STARS!

Thank you for such a Pleasurable buying experience!

I will buy from you again!!

It's truly amazing that this only costs $2.42 shipping included! It works perfectly. I've actually had problems with other car chargers, but this one works great, it even has a light that comes on so you know when its getting power. - Cell Phone Charger - Blackberry Car Charger - Blackberry Bold Charger - Blackberry Bold 9700'

Articulating Wall Mount

I was planning to make my own TV mount because all the affordable ones were so cheaply made. That was until I stumbled on this one for $25.

Wow, was I surprised when it arrived! Very nicely double-boxed and packaged extremely well. Then the construction is quality all the way, right down to the chrome-plated nuts, screws and bushings. This mount was manufactured and boxed as if it were a high-dollar item.

It only took about 15 minutes to have my 37" LG firmly hanging on the wall. Oh, and I did it all by myself.

I can't comment on the mount-to-TV screws because my LG already provided them. And I did use my own 5/16" flat washers on 2 of the lag screws since none were included, but that's just my preference.

I highly recommend this mount, I would have been happy to pay double for such quality.

Now, as usual, many of the reviews here are misleading:

*Dismiss all reviews that talk about adjacent studs, or difficulties getting screws to grab at an angle. This thing BOLTS TO A SINGLE WALL STUD VERY EASILY! Just like what's shown on the instruction sheet, you simply screw 3 of the lag screws down the center of the mount. That's all that's needed, the other holes are just a bonus for more complicated setups. DO NOT PUT 6 OR 7 LAGS INTO A STUD! You will probably shred or weaken it. Crash goes your TV while ripping a chunk of 2x4 through your drywall.

*Dismiss the reviews that mention short lag screws. They are 2", that's a depth of almost 1 1/2" into the stud after going through 1/2" drywall and the mount. If you drilled roughly 3/16" to 1/4" diameter pilot holes and didn't over-tighten your lags, it should be fine. I've mounted mine twice now, using the same (provided) lags.

*I have no idea where this review came from that complains about an adjustment knob getting in the way. My mount doesn't have any kind of knob on it whatsoever, perhaps they are commenting on a different model. There's a tilt adjustment, but it uses a wrench and doesn't protrude anywhere. The ONLY BAD PART I'VE FOUND is that cheap stamped sheet-metal wrench to tighten the tilt mechanism. No problem, I just used my own 13mm wrench instead.

*Yes, the mount can be somewhat stiff. Like another reviewer stated, just lubricate it. I used a few drops of 3-In-1 Oil in the joints.

*And bad reviews from people who didn't research or check to see if their TV or monitor is VESA compliant. That also includes the ones who didn't check to see if the mounting plate will block off their inputs. The plate is about 8 1/2" square, it shouldn't be that hard to see if you'll have a conflict. Besides, in the description it says, "Please make sure what mount your TV needs before you place order. If you are not sure, please send us a message. We will check for you." So they are giving a nice product bad reviews because they simply didn't read the description.

*Then all the complaints of trying to hold the TV to the mount while installing the screws. If you look at the pictures on Amazon you'll see the center screw hole is a "keyhole".

1. Hold the mount to the wall and mark the 3 hole locations on the wall. On the center keyhole you want to only mark the narrow slot at the top.

2. Drill (3) 3/16" holes.

3. Install center screw into the stud, but leave a small gap between the head and the drywall, you can even use the mount to test whether the slot in the "keyhole" passes behind the head.

4. Lay your TV face-down on a safe place like a mattress or a table with a comforter over it. Place the mount over the back of the TV and install screws.

5. Position the mount so the wall mounting plate is reasonably close to the TV and as close to center as possible, and simply hang it on the wall to the center lag screw through the keyhole. That should help with the weight while you screw the top lag in, then the bottom. Don't tighten anything completely until all 3 screws are in, then make sure it's level or plumb.

That's it. This is an inexpensive, very well built product that solves a simple problem. I'll be ordering more for my PC monitors and future customers ASAP. VideoSecu Articulating TV Wall Mount for 22-37" VESA 200 100 LED LCD TV Monitor Full Motion Bracket Free 6" 3-Axis Magnetic Bubble Level and Free HDMI Cable 3V7

This wall mount is great. It is constructed very well and was easy to install. It looks clean and discreet on the wall and provides virtually 180 degree swivel for my 32 inch TV. It came with all needed hardware to mount to the wall including heavy duty wall anchors for the wall screws that did not hit a wall stud. The only complication was that I had to get the correct bolts for mounting the TV to the mount itself (the product did come with two different size bolts for this purpose but neither was the right size to mount the TV to the bracket). I found the correct bolts very easily at my local hardware store.

After hanging the TV (32 inch BestBuy Insignia - Approx 30 lb. with mounting holes 200 X 200) I am very confident my TV is secure and safe. In addition, the product is very well priced. Local stores wanted $100-$150 for similar mounts. WOW!'
