I recently bought my wife a new laptop that didn't come with an optical drive, so we were in the market for a slim external option and I ended up getting her this LG GP08NU6R drive. She hasn't had a chance to use too many types of media on it, but it works great so far and was super quick and easy to set up (no driver or software installation required), and she has had absolutely no problems with it.
I will say that she REALLY loves how it looks too. It's very sleek and pretty with butterflies and scrolling flowers and leaves (look at product photos for detailed close-ups), so it's definitely more of a 'girly-looking' drive and may not be a wise gift for your gamer brother/husband/son (unless he really likes butterflies, and there's nothing wrong with that! :D.)
