OK. I am a girl. I like things easy and figuring how to hook up my macbookpro to my HDTV widescreen TV so I could watch streaming movies and itunes shows without spending a fortune on Apple TV WASN'T EASY!!!!
But heres how:
Buy this kit. It hooks up your TV as an additional display. Select "Arrangement" in your display preferences on the mac and check the "mirror" box, and whey hey you have your mac screen on the TV
BUT you still need sound. You'll need an RCA audio cable (the one with white and red male on one end and a headphone mini jack on the other like this [...]) to plug into the Audio-in on the back of your TV. (I did on my LG plasma). You plug the audio cable into the headphone jack of the laptop. check that preferences recognizes that you want headphone audio output (should be automatic). The product was delivered within schedule. The MiniDisplayPort to HDMI adapter, needed for HDMI connection of a new MacBook Pro to a monitor and not available from Apple, works very well. Display quality on my external monitor is great. Of course, sound has to be transferred via an independent cable but this is a limitation of the MiniDisplayPort itself.
I would buy this again!
On a mac powerbook. When i first plugged in the the cables- i had great videos and no audio- i wasn't until i i went and bought the $35 one at the apple store and read the directions i found out you need to switch the audio component. Go to System Preferences, select sound, select built in hdmi.
If you want sound to come through this HDMI port on your new macbook pros (2010 models) this adapter does NOT work! Contrary to product claims this is not a VESA compliant adapter. Video does work, but not video and audio. Amazon could not get me thru to mfg of this device to get more information. Buyer beware on this one if you want the sound to come thru the hdmi port.
This was a highly desirable adapter, having a new 2009 MacBook Pro without any mini-displayport compatibility. The delivery was quick, and for about a week, the adapter worked flawlessly. Unfortunately, it randomly decided to stop working. Nothing was wrong with the HDMI cable, or the connection port on my MacBook. So, I complained to the company. They were willing to send a replacement in the mail, but I had to return the broken one. Gotta be honest, wasn't too thrilled about paying for shipping on a product that didn't work. Nonetheless, the new one came quickly, and has been working so far.
I give the product a 3 star, and CablesOnline a 4. Good luck.
This adapter served its purpose for about 6 months. It did work well for that period of time. I would have hoped to get more out of the adapter though as I often connect my computer to my tv. I have to move the adapter around to get the signal to show up on the tv. It seems as if some of the internal cables have frayed and need a specific position to function. Now it works sometimes, but I expected more out of it. Note that you need a separate audio cable in order to get audio and video. I knew this ahead of time so that is not to reason for the low score in my review. The reason is that the device barely works now.
UPDATE:
The adapter no longer works at all. I received the adapter in Sept 2010. It stopped working Feb 2011. I took good care of it, but the cables must be very weak.

This product works great, both the video and sound work through the HDMI cable to the monitor. This is a great value, much better than the Apple solution. Includes both the mini display port to HDMI dongle plus a HDMI cable. The cables appear to be high quality and work great.
